I am interested in fitting lpg to my 4.0 P38.
What price should I be looking to pay?

Hoh much mpg can expect relative to petrol?

Thanks,
Steve

hi Steve
If my 4.6 is anything to go by cruising at 75mph on a 90 mile run i got around 36-38 mpg equivilent, not had mine long and it has been at the garage for 3 weeks now, with a start fault, but i am more than happy with the consumption.

Mine was fitted with multipoint lpg when i bought it, but i was told a new instalation (multipoint) would be about £1500 fitted.

The only problem is finding gas here i Plymouth, one has cloased, one has moved and another may be closing this year, but this one is the most expensive, 9p a ltr dearer than my usual place.

ian, try petrol prices.com, they do a list of prices for fuel and search 5,10 15 and 20 mile radius. also google lpg forum. there are a few threads on there with locations and prices etc!

petrol prices.com said this:

There is 1 station selling LPG within 20 miles of PLYMOUTH. Here it is:
Name City Distance Price Last Update
Texaco Malthurst Tamar Carkeel Roundabout Saltash 6.93 miles 49.9p 06-02-2009

but there maybe others such as calor gas centres!

i got 280 miles to 92 litres on a run of nearly 600 miles round trip, i was driving as i normally would and the computer maxxed out at 21 mpg to i would say upto 36mpg equivelent according to computer. but it all depends on driving and price paid. as a rule of thumb you will get 10-15%less mpg than petrol but the price can be upto 50% of petrol it is cheaper whichever way you look at it, some people moan that its not that cheap and they only save a few pence but then we all moan when petrol goes up by a penny, and if your like me you will boycott stations that are higher per litre!

Hi Gav
There is another one (flow gas) about 200yds from Texaco and that is the cheapest one, texaco have now dropped there price to match, but this means i have to cross the toll bridge (£1), Calor used to have a place very close to my workshop but they moved back to there main depot at Lee Mill, this is about 10 miles from home, but there price is quite high, as there buyer bought in bulk when the price was high and they wont drop the price, so they can keep it. :D

there is also a farming supplier that does it, dunno if they operate in your area. also you could get friendly with someone who has a bulk container and uses thiers! i think in bulk it works out at around 30p a litre!

Gav
i was taking it easy, just to see what it is capable of, second day of owning, right boot is to heavy to worry about consumption, unless running on petrol :D

My discovery is very strange, if i drive steady (ish) i get about 22-24 equivalent, but driving between 90-100mph it works out at about 30 mpg, so best i drive fast then. (old single point lpg)

the single point is probably more efficient on high speed and long runs but as most do shorter runs then the multi works out cheapest!

once you get the momentum going on a p38 then you dont need fuel! the sheer weight of the bloody things carries em for at least 20 miles!! lol!

have you had any backfires with it?

I asked about the posibility of having a tank at home, they declined, then i asked about a tank so i could sell lpg and they were talking in the region of £9k set up and running for a three year contract, not including gas, plus rent for premises, have to sell a lot of gas for that.

go get friendly with someone who lives in the sticks! they usually have lpg and it shouldnt be that hard to rig a filler up!

you can also fill from lpg cylinders but you will need a pump. it can be done, thats the point! if you have/know someone with a contract for lpg cylinders then it should work out cheaper!

Yes, had one or two backfires, the last one was while powering up a steep hill, it was such a bang, i thought i hit a rock in the road, lost my K&N air filter, only realy happened when gas was low.

the other thing is my business pays for my fuel, so it doesn't realy matter how much i use, all comes off my tax :D, sorry but it feels good getting somthing out of the tax man

one thing to do to try an eleviate backfires is to make sure the connections on the air intake hose are tight, this caused a load of backfire until i permanently sealed it with some of that liquid metal type stuff but if you use a silicone sealer it should be easier to remove, leave the k&n unsealed and not too tight as this will act as am emergency blow off in case of backfire!

also get the hose secured down as it will dent the bonnet from the underside if not! also i reckon the controller for the lpg system will be a leonardo, you can get the lead off fleebay and download the software from: ELPEGE | LPG | software a.e.b., aeb there are other softwares on there too!

if you get the software and lead just remember to save the current settings to your laptop first as you can then fiddle with em and if you screw up you can reload the originals!!

Hi Gav
The disco has only back fired 4 or 5 times in 4 years, like i said mostly when the tank is about to run out.

Not realy bothered about it now, as the garage has phoned to say my Range rover is ready for collection :clap2::cheer2::clap2:, just waiting for she who must be obayed to come home and give me a lift.

apparently if you can attach a lpg cylinder to your filler then hang cylinder upside down overnight gravity does the rest, no need for pump. Will try one day works out a lot cheaper.

and the problem with that is that the pressure will only ever equalise thus giving in effect two half tanks???

you need a pump, specially designed ones that dont ignite the gas!

Anyone had hassles when trying to insure their LPG powered Range Rovers? I'm thinking of buying one and my existing insurer doesn't want my money because its modified, so my broker would need to cancel it and arrange a fresh insurer who would (at extra price). Having obtained some online quotes, the cheapest ones are always unavailable for modifieds, so its £220/year for unmodified (ie Petrol) and £300/year LPG.

my insurance company charged me £25 extra for the lpg and having 18 inch alloys, although factory fit they said they were not standard
