Hello , today i broke down there has been a whine coming from the rear but today it got worse and as i pulled on the motorway it was louder then there was a crunch ,do you think the rear diffs shot and is it a hard job replacing especially as i'll be on my back doing this as i have no ramps .
 
Hi, I had a problem with my rear diff, it was fairly easy to change with a trolley jack and a couple of axle stands, remove prop and rear diff supports, I then cut the clips of the inner drive shaft boots and pulled the drive shafts apart. I have a td4 but used a rear diff from a petrol, just check that the casings have the same number and the ratio is the same, took about 2hrs. Good luck
 
there is only one rear diff listed for all freelander 1's but I would also be checking the vcu as well as that is the usual culprit for making the diff go.
 
You could test yer rear diff by lifting both rear wheels and turning them.

If the prop is fitted and stays stationary, turn 1 rear wheel and the other rear wheel will turn in the opposite direction.

If you disconnect the rear prop to the rear diff, and turn 1 rear wheel the diff flange (prop connection) will turn. If you try to keep that still the other wheel will turn instead. This is because the 'wheel to flange' is the path of least resistance compared to 'wheel to wheel' resistance, for the effort to escape when you turn 1 rear wheel.

If something is wrong inside the rear diff you should feel/hear it. Naturally the boise/feeling will be different to when it's at speed.

Stay safe when lifting yer Freelander. Support with axle stands etc and not a jack, after it's been lifted. Chock front wheels so you can release handbrake to spin rear wheels.
