After having a problem on my 300 tdi defender with the timing belt running forward and wearing the belt out (she has the modified pulley)

I decided to swap the engine, I got a supposed good one (boost pin and fueling turned up ) and fitted today

After being reluctant to start she would tick over but not rev then she cleared and would miss a bit then rev normally higher up

Took her for a run and again higher revs were fine but misses lower down

Plus a puff of white smoke then alot of black reek on hard acceleration (so much that it would blind the car behind)

Is this likely to be a fueling issue ? Is it easy to return the pump to factory settings?

As engine is unknown to you, you are going to have to start with basics first, valve clearances, pump timing etc etc.
Boost pin are junk, they give to much fuel at low rpms/boost and this is where all your black smoke is coming from.

Thanks for the reply, I set the valve clearances and replaced the timing belt while the engine was out
Il be back at the workshop tomorrow so il check cold starting again

Search for very recent thread on a 200 doing the same thing, guy had two threads running but both had several things to check

Advanced the pump timing slightly and the problems cured

Also turned the fueling back a 1/4 turn and the black smoke has reduced to an acceptable level
