I'm looking after 3 landrovers for the winter in ski resort and one of them seems to have a sick engine.....

I was driving it up the mountain and it seemed like the throttle had stuck as the revs shot up but after pulling over i found lots of fuel in with the oil. it went to a local (french) garage who flushed the oil and gave it back saying it would be fine, 2 weeks later theres loads of fuel in the sump again, like 6 inches up the dipstick!

my initial thought was worn piston rings letting diesel through but looking at a recent thread it seems it could be a split diaphragm in the diesel lift pump? anyone have any experience of these problems or have any ideas how to diagnose it?

many thanks

actually i think the landrovers are defender 110 td5's

hi thanks for the quick response.

does anyone have anymore info on the diesel lift pump, such as how much it might cost and how hard is it to replace? i've only got limited tools out here so is it likely to be a garage job?

thanks:)

Lift pump is **** easy.

Not sure on a series lump, but a 300tdi is soooooo fapping easy, the series lumps can't be much harder. I'm pretty sure it's a case of removing three pipes on a diesel, and 2 on a petrol engine. 2 x bolts holding it to the block, and then reverse the removal. you just have to make sure that the pump arm sits ON TOP of the CAM when you put it back in. And of course spend a happy 10 mins bleeding the diesel system afterwards. Don't just go fitting the pump and cranking the engine over - you'll force an air lock in the Injectors/injector pump.....

Lift Pumps are aboot £20 BTW.

cool thanks:)

right i'll have to have a look at it. i think its actually a defender 110 td5 was a bit hasty in my first post lol. hopefully it will be an easy job on this one as well?

Could be seals on the injectors - it's a known TD5 problem apparently....google it and you'll get loads of hits for td5's and blown injector seals / fuel channel cracks.

Gimmie a 2.25 lump of iron anyday :D
