2002 Td5 HCPU. came down the highway and suddenly lost power. It felt for some time like driving an N/A. It was still rolling ok at 80km/h and thought I'll make it home which I did. When I came to a stop I noticed rough idle and when I shut down the engine to get my nanocom, i could not start the engine again. Starter cranking but no start.

The nanocom gives me 10.6 mil lamp drive open load (logged) and 10.7 glow plug lamp drive open load (logged).

After power loss I noticed a lot of power loss in slight uphills but even ground I could sometimes feel like turbo giving in a slight push and the loosing it again.

What could I be looking at here?

I have bypassed AGR, I have bypassed mid silencer. New injector harness. all sensors cleaned a while ago. looked thru the hoses and all were attached or wastegate busted but since it's not even starting now I am thinking electronic issue.

EDIT: I went out to check the red plug which I thoroughly cleaned some time ago. No oil there. My fuel pump has been kind of loud i think since i got the car 7000km ago, but i cannot hear any new sounds in that. still will not start, cranks but no promise.

I am actually thinking the same as you. I bought this ride 7K km ago. have worked on it and got it running real sweet. The pump has always had the same noise, but then again I dont know how a td5 pump should sound. But I feel it's a bit noisy. i should maybe try the purge mode and see if I get the engine to even start that way. I know the previous owner has changed the pump once, but to what? not OEM I think. And I have had huge issues with non genuine parts lately with my series3 109.

If you can, check fuel pressure and flow at the fpr.

Also it might be worth trying a new crank position sensor. Try borrowing one off of q mate.
Cheers

Yeah, that would be good. Have to try to get the ride to the garage where we wrench where all is possible. thats why thought if I could just get it to run but otherwise it's a tow job.

I purged the fuel system. I can hear hiss from the reg. no gurgling or so. I finally got it started by cranking until it started. plugged the nanocom in and took it for a short spin. I can get the turbo only up to 0.2bar and the wastegate mod shown 0.00%.

If it’s a defender they don’t have wastegate modulator fitted, Discovery has wastegate modulator

I have made a pretty thotough go thru whn I received the truck. So I changed the fuel filter not too long ago. Also I replaced the valve by the fuel filter that caused a hard to start symptom since it was shut and problem was solved back then. The loss of power problem occured pretty suddenly.

I have ordered new silicone turbo hoses and a VDO siemens fuel pump.

I also started to wonder if I could have blocked something by using fuel system cleaning agent. First a complete cleaning by STP and then Red Line you add to every tank a little. It cured my smoke puffs at idle. But could enough durt have come loose and blocked injection or somn'? I went thru the injectors with nanocom testing they all click equally.

I havn't had possibilities to do that where Im parked now. Will next week take it to the garage and start tinkering. Also thought of checking the wastegate valve in case that has started to get sticky. What would the symptoms on that be?

Don't know the TD5 that well but a turbo/wastegate issue won't give you poor starting

When you fit your new pump start putting mineral 2-stroke oil in the tank when you fill up. About 500 ml per full tank and about 300 ml for a top up. Modern low sulfur diesel doesn't have the lubricating properties of older fuels and the 2 stroke adds this back for the pump and the rest of the fuel system also benefits. The mineral 2-stroke burns cleanly without adding extra smoke.

Before replacing the pump check the gauze filter which could be blocked.

Thanks for the tips. Today i started the car to take it to the garage, after running purge mode since it would not start otherwise. for 5 minutes it ran great, turbo pulling stong easily to 70mph before i lost the power again and towed it to the garage. When i tried to start it at the garage, would not start again, so the pump seem to me as option nr 1 at the moment. I am still waiting for the parts but meanwhile we might have an old pump we an try it out with.

UPDATE: I replaced the fuel pump, blew with air thru all the lines, replaced filter and and valve. Opened the regulator, cleaned it and the gauze and replaced with new O ring. From the red line / fuel cooler out, I got a good preassure. Still I could get the car running decnt for a minute before it started spitting loads of grey smoke and stumbling till it dies. Purge mode on, again I could do a minute and same disaster. Seems like the injectors are trying to compensate for lack of fuel, therefore the smoke I recon. So it still seems like lack of fuel but cannot get my head around why??? I could notice that even if I had good fuel preassure from the fuel cooler, the stream from the outer line pointing to rear exiting filter was real feeble. But the line was fine when shooting air thru. Any ideas? I am lost... Next I figure I go for the injector seals.... just in case

it should have a free flowing return to tank, id look at that and do injector o rings and washers if they havent been done in recent years

I had no tools to measure the prassure but what was coming out thru the fpr was loads. And I cannot understand what in the line would give bad preassure as all is replaced and checked.
