Hi there. I put my Disco TD5 into 1st the other day. When releasing the clutch there was a clunk and then no drive. I tried changing to low/high ratio but still no drive. Had to get transported back home and when putting it on the loader, the handbrake had also stopped working? Does anyone have any idea what happened? The clutch did need to be pressed quite hard to the floor when changing gear prior to it

If the handbrake stopped working it would seem to point towards the diff - rear - being the problem area as the handbrake is on the rear propshaft.

Well just a guess from me really

Does it move in diff lock, could be a rear halfshaft if it moves with diff lock, that is most likely the issue

Depends which version of D5 it is as to whether it has a difflock or not. Or whether it is accessible from the cab or not!

But yes, of course, you are right!

Am I?

I want surprised to find they were optional as the one I bought has a diff lock.

You are lucky, I miss it on mine.
Early, prefacelift, it is in the box but only operable from under the car, not even an option. Later on, not there at all, then the last ones could have it on request, I believe, i.e. speced by first buyer. So I guess yours must be one of these.
My D1s obvs both have one, although I have had to free the control mech off on both as they get stuck.

LR thought that traction control was the be all and end all, it does work I find, but can be a bit brutal and a bit hit and miss. I understand they only left the diff lock in the box on the first D2s to help the mechs when doing some sort of work so why they took it away for the first facelift models I have no idea.

Maybe someone will come on and tell us! ;)

Money I think

Thanks for your reply. If you put it in gear and release the clutch, the prop doesn't turn so not sure?

If this locks the propshaft, jack up and support one rear wheel and see if it turns. If it does then the problem is either with a half shaft or the diff. To be really sure jack the other one up as well.
Then put it in neutral, turn the prop-shaft by hand and see if either wheel turns, in turn. If one does and the other doesn't then that narrows it down to which half-shaft is bust.
