I was happily driving my defender stopped to let an ambulance past. As I stopped, something made a very loud self destructing noise and when I put it in gear to set off, it revved lots and refused to move.

After getting out and looking round, propshafts still in place, nothing visible broken I managed to drive the vehicle (very slowly and carefully) back home with the diff lock on. Every time i took it out of diff lock, it made very horrible metal grinding noise, but when I put it back in I could drive again.

It was making a clunk on taking up drive beforehand, I thought it was slack in the prop. maybe I was wrong.

can anyone shed any light on this?!
 
having to put the diff lock on to get traction i would be tempted to go for the half shafts first,this would be my first job and its easy to do and eliminates 1 item checked, then move on to gear boxes, i remember years ago that the lwb models were prone to snapping half shafts
 
guess I was living in dreamland thinking of the word cheap!!!

If both main props visible under vehicle are still there in place and attached as should be, I would have thought it wasn't one of them?? therefore half shaft seems to make sense

Also thinking if gears etc still work with diff lock on then it might not be them either????

If I start with half shafts, do I have to pull them apart to discover if it's them, or can you simply inspect them?
 
undue the bolts on the hubs, belt it with a lump hammer once only, grab hold of them and pull them out.
 
put in in gear, with diff lock OUT, engine on, and bring up the clutch. Get underneath, and see which propshaft is turning. (I recommend 1st low at tickover for this)

That axle holds your buggered prop. Then its a case of taking stuff apart to fix it.



I may also have the axle spares you need, as i have two almost complete axles for an early 90 sitting here. :)

Anyone who does that can expect to die.

If the problem is in for example the centre diff and it takes a bite (which it could 'cos it's maybe knackered) you'll get run over by yourself driving a two ton Landy!

It's explaining this when you are filling out the insurance claim ... they just might not understand.

Found out today - (took to garage to save me time!!) that rear nearside half shaft is gone along with its respective flange. Also, offside flange has play in it, so recommended that is changed as well. Got quoted original land rover parts: shaft £117, flange £80 each, labour £60

That's quite a bit more cash than I was thinking - Found bits on ebay a lot cheaper, but was wondering if it is because they are made by various other companies??
 
depending on what a axle you have, i have the required spares, will sell them to you, in good working order, for pittance. I caqn also explain to you (and even maybe help you!) fit them yourself, its a really easy job to do.

thanks for offer of help - this time I paid garage to do the job. Found out though that they went to land rover franchise in Chester for prices of parts. I phoned supplier John Craddock and got quoted £40 for OE half shaft and £22 for OE flanges. That is a whole £193 cheaper!!!!! Anyway, on top of that they charged cost of parts and only £50 labour. So I went with the garage as I needed the car for work today and wasn't going to have the time beforehand.

Next time though, I may take you up on the offer...!

Tell them you are not entirely happy about the job.
Ask them to show you the invoice for the parts - if you are paying LandRover prices you should be getting LandRover parts.
Ask them directly (take a witness with you) did they use genuine LandRover parts because they have charged for them.

I bet they got the parts from Paddocks and charged you tops.

Mention Trading Standards ... that usually concentrates minds.

I did say I wasn't happy about prices. However, they did show me the invoice they got from the dealer for the parts. It was an invoice that showed only the parts I needed on the date they ordered them for me from land rover franchise in chester (as they had told me). So I think I have to believe them. He charged me the cost on the invoice he had.

Anyway, he saw my point when I said if he got them from somewhere like britpart, john craddock, and put 100% mark up on them I would have a paid less and he would have made more than the £50 labour.

He admitted he didn't know where to go to get parts. So I left him a few numbers for future use!!! I have used him before for my mondeo and he has been fine and I haven't been charged too much before.

You live and learn...
 
Also, He did show me the new parts after he got them and even the old ones after they came off. As far as I can tell they are genuine landy. Obviously you can see the new bits so at least I know they're on there!! and it now works with no clunk on starting and stopping.
 
do a search for flanges - coz someone on here has dozens of em in their garage.

that'd be me, still got far too many of them left if anyone needs some

80 quids each from a main dealer !!!!!!!!!!
