My td5 keeps using water pushing it out the tank it's not over heating. No loss of power to be honest the ####er pulls like a train. There's no water in the oil or the other way round. I have had a look around an this morning the was a puddle under the car can't find where it's coming from. I have had a good look in the net and seem to think its my core plugs has anybody had similar problems ?

what year TD5? could be hgf between water ways or cracked head. If pre 2003 would say it is a cracked head

Well after filling to back up I drove it a while checking it. I drove it like a priest never gave it much turbo and when I got back it had only used about half a litre it was at normal temp at halfway. I have driven it on the mot giving it abit of welly and its kicked out alot more. I have just put about 3 litres in it and it was circulating gave it it a rev and low and behold the water has vanished and the heaters have gone cold. The temp gauge was at quarter while doing this but the heaters were hot before the water vanished.

It's a 99 td5 ahh well looks like that's ####ed then

Joe

yep bad metal in the first 3 yrs of TD5 plus plastic dowel pins. You might be lucky with just a head gasket and metal dowel pins(upgraded in 03 and up)Plus 03 heads are different better material and will fit your 99
But get head pressure tested to make sure it is not cracked

Are the radiator hoses rock solid once warm? Get a sniff test done at any indy garage for a few pounds and it will confirm head gasket problems if any.

Just looked on Ebay to price it up if it is that I think I will just bang in a 300tdi in it

Before you do that make sure first if head is bad. Then PM Ratty, Shifty or james martin as they might have a source for a good head. By the time you switch everything around I believe time and money would be more. Plus the loss in value of your TD5, with having a 300 tdi in it. JMO is all.
What price have you seen for a TD5 head?

its not unusual for the expansion tank cap to leak and only costs a few pounds to replace,
also if there is a pool of water under the car surely its a leak rather than headgasket

A mate is coming down later to have a look (diesel fitter). I have only just done the clutch and flywheel about a 1000 miles ago if that heads now battered with it

If the expansion cap is goosed would it just let water push out the over flow pipe ?
Joe

Well I have just ordered a new one will give it a go first fingers crossed ( very doubtful it's that :( )

Joe

Well the guy in the parts shop ordered the wrong one think its for the defender not the same as the one that on it so going to wait til he get the other tomorrow. I do t think its going to do anything. What the job like changing the head gasket on a td5 if it is this I would like to have a go myself

Joe

I have just got the new cap the same as the one on it just the rubbers on it are new and not worn. My old one had 140 on the cap this has 200. So checked the water it was about a inch below the line started the car filled it up put the heaters on full blast opened the bleed screw til water appeared filled up the expansion tank only another inch left the old cap on gave it till the water was circulating. Gave it some revs till the turbo whistled 4200 revs the car isn't moving and a little trickle of water cam out the over flow pipe. Put the new one on and done the same nothing appeared so hopefully that is it (fingers crossed). I will take it for a good run next week working all weekend ( black taxi driver). Thanks for all you help it was much appreciated

Joe

Well took it for a little run before got it up to running temp half way on gauge. Jumped out no water lost popped the cap it blew some out because it was hot felt the rad and half my rad is cold. Got back in done another mile or so jumped out left it running felt the top hose was rather hard could squeeze it together with abit of force so must be getting air in somewhere well thought it would of been alright but looks like I will be digging deep into my pockets

them symptoms sound like the head gasket, its not to expensive if you can do the work yourself and the head is not knackered,
you need new head bolts and gasket set, personally I would have the head tested whilst its off and skimmed
