hi guys as post says im looking for someone who knows hubs/swivels well to see if i can get some help on where to look first before i have to strip everything. basically i noticed a "shake" that starts just over 30mph so jacked up my front end and i have movement/play on both front wheels. driver side is a lot worse then passenger side. but im not sure what to check first or how. the main hub bearing or the swivel bearing as i have seen nasty info on both lol.

so if someone out there would like to quiz me and i'll answer best i can to see if this can be narrowed down before i end up taking off the lot.

TBH there are a number of trains of thoughts here, steering is safety related item, not to be taken lightly, all parts are readily available and relatively cheap too.

Don't forget steering ball joints here too, you've got 4 of them and again, relatively cheap to replace if at all suspect.

Is this a sudden happening or gradually gotten worse to the point of needing advice?

How is your steering damper?

got worse over about 6 weeks and now i parked it up as even though it still feels safe movement that shouldnt be there is never good.

steering damper dont exist that went ummmm many months ago.

im looking for someone who can give me somewhat of a guide or order of things to look into, best i can explain the movement when driving is the car stays feeling smooth but the steering wheel tells another story that shakes left and right about 1/2" to 1" each way.

when jacked up off the floor i can hold the tire and shake the wheel (the best i can explain what shaking i have is its like a non 4x4 with a wheel bearing gone about 1mm wobble)
 
Wheel bearings ... Swivel bearings ... Check all the steering bushes and trackrod ends ... At the same time check all the rear end bushes including suspension and especially check the A-frame bushes.

When you're checking the bushes it's a good idea to do it with the chassis lifted so there's no, or minimal, forces already acting on the joints. You'll need a large bar to do this properly, I'd say a 3' crowbar is about best ... I'd had a rear trailing arm bush 'gone', which i hadn't found or felt for ages. It was eventually traced when we lifted the Disco up and used a large prybar on it and saw it had a load of movement that we couldn't find when it was parked normally on it's wheels!
 
Agree with Paul on checking bushes too, always good to get the whole axle off the ground to find any wiggle room.

You could just strip the hubs down and adjust the bearings and check the swivel pins while it's apart, I run my wheel bearings in oil in stead of grease, if you run greased bearings it might be worth stripping them down for a fresh greasing and adjustment.

The rapid deterioration could well be swivel pins and bushings/bearings.

All we can do here is speculate but keep us updated as you pull it apart.

thanks dieseldog69 will keep you all updated on what i do and what i find will be back at it tomorrow when i have stands to put it on lol.
plan for now is to get it good enough for mot that i thought was in march thats actually in a couple of weeks, long term when the mot is done i want to get the parts and change them when i can anyways but i'll get a whole new story going when that comes up haha. for now the bearings are in grease not oil but that may change when it comes to rebuilding the CORRECT way after i get it through MOT lol

get someone to rock steering wheel vigorously whilst you hold/observe the different steering components you will feel where the play is,same can be done for suspension by rocking vehicle

will do but first thing i need to do is stop the disk/hub wobble lol quick question on the subject of axel/steering what are the differences between the abs and non abs axels other than the obvious abs sensors.

top swivel pin and chrome ball but both function the same
 
Swivel housings are machined to accept an ABS sensor that hovers over the CV joint, apart from that, nothing much.
 
ok guys time for update today was a fun day lol.
got the wheel nuts off and boom issue number 1 damn wheel didnt want to come off much swearing and kicking wheel off :)
next thing removed the clip and drive flange (think thats its name) and took off the bearing lock nut tightened up the tension nut as much as i could. still lots of movement as i expected.
so went to remove the brake caliper and of course its a 12 side bolt and i have 6 side impact sockets..... off to halfrauds for a socket.
got back got the caliper off removed the entire hub/disc and lucky for me i just happened to have another about so put it on for now to see if it made a difference.
without tightening it silly tight no play and free rolling. so going to test it and report back.

what i know now i've done that. after my MOT is sorted new bearings all round and at least new front calipers also in order asap.

she's doing well haha the abuse it takes im shocked its still running and not snapped in half. i work it hard so expect the problems but this time its bitten me on the A$$ cause i made a silly mistake.... thought the mot was march i was only 2 months off lol.

also done a seconds clutch now and got to be honest wasnt half as bad as the first one i done (no i didnt burn out mine someone else wanted one done lol)

first test drive brakes are working much better now lol but still got my shake so deal with the other side tomorrow then next test drive.
havent forgot the welding thats all sorted haha will be needing to change the rear body mount soon though. damn thing keep growing lists lmao
 
Wheel off floor ! 9oclock /3oclock (HANDS) Shake ! 12oclock/6oclock (HANDS) shake ! 9/3 wheel bearing ! 12/6 wheel bearing / swivel ! You ant got a LOAD of MUD on inside of wheel rim have you ?? will send out of balance !! :rolleyes::rolleyes:
