Oh god nooooo, not another tyre thread ....

yeah, sorry, did use the search, been reading for about an hour, mostly found threads about mud tyres, if this and that tyre would fit my car etc etc, spacing this, spacing that, but it seems most of you do go for more offroad tyres than the other way around :D

Anyway, i now have the Michelin XCL mounted, came with the car (1986) when i bought it last year (military standard?)

They look nice and all, but the car starts to sound like a drummer on speed when doing more than 40miles an hour. It won't be long and they will need to be replaced. Since i don't do that much offroading i wouldn't mind some tyres which are a bit more silent when doing higher speeds. I have no experience with other tyres so i'm hoping some of you can advise me a bit :)

They are the 750x16 btw.

You will have to be more specific with what you want your tyre for ?

Road only ? bit of both ? the more they are geared up for off road the more noise they are going to make.

Best bet is a 2nd set of rims then you can have the best of both worlds .

Haha, i know the feeling Mick, but this should be an easy win. Already got myself a wright offroad moulded matting set, which will be in next week. Still looking for a rubber mat in for in the back

Jason, a bit of both but leaning towards road. I only needed it for some dirt roads to get from the road to the river in Norway, but i only go once a year :)

get some AT's then, much quieter and better mpg but still enough tread pattern to be useful, BFG or cooper st very good and long lasting

cooper AT3 are quieter than the stt, and will work for easy green lanes and good for snow also. Plus they wear longer( 60k miles warrenty) than BFG's

Funny, I'm about to start the whole tyre choice game...

Currently have Insua Specials - 265/75/16's on but they do make a racket! Lucky for me, when I got the truck, it came with 2 spare rims and 2 new tyres - I need to replace one for the MOT.

What I am thinking is try to find another 2 rims and go for something slightly less aggressive, with the ability to stick the specials back on if I need to.

Not sure what to go for though, as I begrudge spending £100+ on a bit of rubber just because it has BFG written on the side!

i got mickey thompsons baja,s on mine no road noise at all very hard wearing aswell , but they ant cheap !

Got to be mentioned that type, make & size make a big difference to the look of your defender.

Bog standerd road tyres just look crap !

I fitted set of Runway Enduro A/Ts on mine 235/85/R16. Very pleased so far. I don't do "off roading" as such but muddy fields and a foot of snow don't seem to trouble them at all and I can't hear any tyre noise, over the engine, transmission, wind etc.

you are not just paying for BFG on side , they do do big mileages as well , but its a personal choice very much dependant on what your cost/ benefit ratio is based on . So its a question that only you know the answer to , so best answer is to read the various tyre choice threads and then decisde on what you want to achieve your goal HTSH

You could try a set of these not a bad price and the same tread pattern is pretty quiet on a Rangerover , and then get a set of snow tyres for winter
Nexen Tyres / SUV 4x4 / Nexen Roadian AT2 Nexen Roadian AT 2 - 235/85 R16 120Q XL TL &pound81.70 SUV Tyres - 4x4 Tyres - All Terrain Tyres - Off Road Tyres - 16" R16" - 235/85/16, 235/85R16

I can vouch for these on my 110, more engine noise and rattle than tyre noise, you can here them with the windows down, but they are by far the quietest noise on the fender :)

B.F.G. A/T are probably the one tyre I couldn't find a bad word about when I was after noooo rubber 235/85/r16;););)

I have BFG 235/85 Ats fitted to my 110 and I can't say I find the road noise intrusive. I've used them for arid and greenlaning without any problems (yet).
