Hi

I am looking for a Freelander 1 but in need of Help. I have about £2500 (flexible) to spend. Not to sure what I could get from that.

Looking for advice?

Petrol or Diesel
Age etc

It has to be a 5 door version

Can any one out there help me?
Cheers Kev

Quote a few very early TD4s around lately - £2500 should get one in the UK with cash in hand but it wk have faults - best model to go for though

Get a 1.8 !

You cannot be serious! He would spend another £2.5k replacing head gaskets in year one and it would depreciate to zero on year one - but I suppose they are cheap - I would go for the early diesel 2.0L Rover engine if on a serious budget - I had one for 10 years with no bother - not as good as the TD4 but a very capable and cheap Freelander.

Of course I'm joking - do you think I'm mad ! Lol

Only buy a 1.8 if its cheap, you don't do a high mileage and then budget for a head gasket replacement at some point  Ok I have a 1.8 but it was crazy cheap to buy and bizarrely been very reliable.

As said above get the TD4 (from 2000 on) diesel or spend a bit less and get the earlier 2 litre diesel, TD4 especially is quite a bit quicker than a 1.8 petrol and much more economical.

Whatever you buy check that its propshafts are still in place and that the VCU is not siezed

Nothing wrong with 1.8's

I have 2 now, and have had another 2 previously. Though I replace the H/G as soon as I buy the car, never had 1 fail :)

Diesel is the way forward..

Ive got a 99 XEDi (L series) and its fab.. Plenty of torque for towing, and im getting 39MPG average out of it.. TD4 is also a great engine... They are two very different engines, but to the average joe bloggs theres no difference, both sound like a diesel (ie clattery) and both go like a diesel (ie slow!)

Got to be honest, aside from different dash clocks, i really cant tell the difference between mine and my mates 02 Td4!!

If 1 had a budget of yours and i had to choose between a 2000 (v or w reg) L series with 90k on the clock, or a 2000 onwards Td4 with 160 on the clock, id go for the L series.
Whatever you choose, try and make it a L series of Td4 diesel - both are fab engines and ecenomical too...

Petrols are usually prone to failiure, but as mantamad says, if you can find one at a good price that suits your budget.. then consider it.. But you WILL have to do the head gasket at some point, so budget for that too..

Good luck
