I had a 90 many years ago before the mrs got pregnant. At the time the easiest thing to do was get a "sensible " family car as my 90 only had 2 seats. I have hated all 4 years 3months and 16 days of owning my Vauxhall. So, as I have had enough its time for a change! I want to ask what the things are to watch for when buying one. Any problem areas? I've got at a push £4k to spend.

Thanks in advance.

thanks @neilly pal! I've always been a Defender man but my mate just bought a Disco 2 and I've been hooked ever since. I just wanted to know the basics really, what the rough parts are and how easy to fix? What should I be looking at getting for £4k?

That's unbelievable! I suppose you need to know where to look haha :)

For 4K you can get a good late facelift if you search a lot or are very lucky. Or you can get a pile of stinky rusty rotten falling apart underneath rubbish BUT it will look lovely up top.

Read the attachment , ask any questions if needed.

You have to be very very careful.

As advised , take someone who knows what to look for if possible, do the checks , and do not be afraid to walk away. Then it helps if you like playing with spanners or it can get very expensive.

I like mine , but then I am stupid.

Cheers

Mine were £2600 worth of facelift td5 GS needing a little tlc to bring it up to probably what is now worth 3500, needs an underseal though now before it begins its slow journey to melting

HAHAAHA thanks pal, i'll keep it in mind. My mate who has just bought one is ex military and fixed the Landy's in the army so I think he knows his way around (or at least I'm hoping he does). I'll keep my eyes out for the under carriage being rotten, and try not to get drawn in to the shiny lovely stuff up top haha

Any defender donations welcome to the ryanday1 charity...
suppose i have the series but not too road worthy!

Mine is actually a Ninety, and me Disco is a V8, and pretty hanging cosmetically, although it all works!

You will get there with the Series.:) And for me, a good series is just as good, or better, than a Fender or Disco! :)

Oh @kee ,

Whilst on your journey , if you find ( or anyone else for that matter has ) any useful additions to add to the attachment then please let me know, I keep it as a living updateable doc that gets revised quite often.

Cheers

no problem pal will do!

3250 got me an 03 facelift gs with some little creature comforts like climate control, cruise control etc. 100k on the clock almost exactly.
Seemed like a good buy at the time and almost everything on the checklist was A-Ok if it wasn't it was clearly pointed out to me.

The only thing I will say in regards to the checklist is the sunroofs. I was told the sunroofs didn't leak, and there were no signs that they did leak.
Then he first heavy rain after I bought it I got a shower inside.
Then I remembered the guy I bought it off kept it in a garage so probably never realised himself.
That or he just didn't want to tell me but who knows.

I got a disco 2 td5 auto two days before xmas for £3.5k, with a years test, no advisories and it only failed on the horn which was replaced.
I have never had a land rover before though worked on many and never had an autobox either, I also never had a vauxhall till last sept when my mum gave me her old one, a 2010 Meriva with 21230 on the clock and I hated it from the start, I am selling it asap now I have the disco.

The whole family love it, it is big, powerfull enough, can pull a chassis cab dodge 50, fuel econ is much better than any of my trucks though being auto not as good as a manual, my first drive was a 700 mile round trip and afterwards I got out and walked away, any other vehicle I have I would have crawled after 700 miles.... yes it was a pleasure to drive and when I stopped I just wanted to start again.

I love driving and always have and even though I know I will be continully fixing / replacing something now I have a Landy (same as owning 50 series vehicles) and I know there are a lot of electrics that can go wrong, it is a love job and me and my son are already planning a rock crawler now we have the Landy bug though most likely a def 90 for that project.

So to round up my waffling....go for it, you know you want to, they are such great vehicles etc etc......

:)
