Have had a 200tdi sitting in my garage for a long time - had to pull the 2.5D out for a bad clutch and had the mad idea that now was the time to fit the 200!

Fired up the TDi on the garage floor and it went right off - but the throttle didn't seem to do anything and it was while not at full chat definitely not idling. I only ran it 30 seconds or so, being afraid to overheat it. Could this have been cold start on the VE pump or is the pump buggered?

I don't for obvious reasons want to stick this thing in my daily driver only to find out it's buggered...and VE pumps are not exactly easy to get here.

Well as its going to need a cambelt why not pop the pump off and let a diesel shop take a look?
Have you popped the 4 screws off the top to see if the fuel pin is seized?

As has been said, after sitting for so long its just possible that some dirt may have found its way into the pump and its going to require a service.
Had a similar situation a couple of years back, had the pump apart at a diesel service shop and found a chocolaty mix in the pump from all the dirt that had accumulated in what was left of the diesel that was in it. An hour to clean and calibrate and still running today.

Not quite, it shpuld rev up yes but not cleanly, the turbo will be restrictive the diaphram in the pump won't open which is what allows the fuel pin to move inside the pump it should rev up a little but with lots of black smoke.
 
Glad to hear that all is not lost. Now that I know it will run I can do things like pop the top and have a look at the fuel pin. Might well just get a gasket kit,pull it apart and give it a good cleaning, which from the sound of things is likely what ails it.

To answer the turbo question yes it was on the engine, but no it was not hooked to the intake. So this may have been part of the don't want to rev - do tell please 200tdi Ayre?

In any case, I do think I will end up putting this engine in and expecting I can sort the pump.

Ifloochies,mate - please do elaborate or point me to data on this fuel pin issue. My Google-fu is not working on it. :)

Engin will run and rev regardless if turbo air side connected or not, the fuel pin wont move as theres no boost pressure to move the diaphragm, so if the fuel pin doesnt move there wont be any smoke at all, never mind loads of black smoke!

Google tune bosch ve pump theres loads of info out there and you will see many references to fuel pin etc.
 
Run my 200 without turbo did a mixed run of road and track this weekend doing 60mph max probably as 4 people and load of gear.
Got 35.2mpg and no issue with lack of power.

My 200 never did 35mpg and when I blew turbo hoses off instant loss of power and tonnes of black smoke. Was tuned a fair bit though
