I have a 1975 Series III 88 with what I think is a IIA tranny (no syncro in 1st/2nd...double clutch). I don't know how to confirm...so maybe that is my first question.
Recently, I have noticed that there is significantly great leaking occuring while the vehicle is sitting.
My question is threefold, 1) What is the most likely place that it would be leaking from? It seems to be dripping down from higher up on the tranny onto the driveway near the crossmember frame (located just forward from where you fill the tranny). Is there good literature (online) showing the tranny and its seals? 2) Could it be as simple as replacing a seal? 3) How might I go about this fix without removing the tranny. Can I go through the doghouse or can I removed the bench seat?
Thanks for your assistance... -Lo

1) Sounds most likely to be he tranny. I've had a few transits and they have all leaked oil. Try taking it out and replaceing it with a gearbox.

2) I can't see any reason why putting an arctic mammal in a transit would stop oil leaking out of a Landrover, but stranger things have happened.

3) When you say "go about this fix" I am assuming you mean stopping the ep90 from leaking out. This being the case, the simplest fix is to:
a) remove the oil filler plug from the gearbox
b) suck all of the oil out of the gearbox with a large syringe and a length of silicone pipe
c) replace the oil filler plug

Hey presto .... no more leak.

I'll get me coat ........

Lo,
For the last couple of months I have been a very regular purchaser of EP80/90. Gearbox and transfer box in my SWB seriesIII ok etc little difficulty in getting second from third but I can live with it. I would bet that your oil is seeping from the back of the transfer box then dribbling onto propshaft/hand brake and spreading/spraying onto xmember - I have come to appreciate the smell on the drive - my wife has contrary views.
I am not hugely technical but where the output shaft of the transfer box exits the body of the case the joint between transfer box and drive gear has a number of shims instead of gaskets - this is where my ecological disaster emanates from - these can and do weep/gush. My oil bill is around £17/month - can someone brighter than me work out at what point a rebuild is viable as opposed to propping up Castrol's share price!

if yer only problem is the leak from the back end then now is as good a time as any, a good afternoon's work should see it done. if on the other hand you mean a rebuild i'd be tempted to get a used box from ebay and spend some time and money rebuilding it.that way when you do put it in you will know you have a good box that should be leak free for ....oh.. at least 5 miles

if it ain't broke it ain't mine
