As above, leaking from round the diff quiet badly cleaned it all up but cant really tell if its form the drain plug or the diff gasket. The diff is silent and it does not seem to be coming from the pinion seal (no traces after it was cleaned off) the axle casing is very solid and free of rust and neither the drain or the diff have been disturbed

There's no gasket round the diff.
Try nipping up the diff mounting nuts a bit - worked for me.

If it's the drain plug, and it's not loose, try some PTFE tape around the thread.
 
check that your breather isn't blocked, find where the tube ends standard position is on the "A" frame and blow dow it, if it is blocked the pressure build up in the diff has to blow out somewhere, as trewy states check nuts and level plug. My diff pan looked alright but right at the top there was a clump mud that was hiding a tiny pin hole caused by rust and whilst driving oil would leak
 
Hi all.
Just lost the rear diff on my classic the day i bought it. I t was due to rust making pin holes in the pan. Got a new diff, hubs and knuts and my friend will obviously klnock it off the price but i would take out the diff and check from the inside out as mine locked up in the outside lane at 70mph !!
