just spent the afternoon on the hard shoulder of the M8, wife's P38 - burning oil smell, sluggish/misbehaving gearbox. Pulled up and waved the 'subaru cloud' of oil smoke out the way - sure enough a fair amount of oil coming from in front of the transfer/gearbox, can't see exactly where but it is not a crack and definitely a seal as I suspect this has been gradual judging by the oil rainbow outside the house when it rains which I had put down to my series 3. Anyway, I checked the oil level - low. I also noticed that the last oil added into the car was 5w20 which strikes me as a bit gurly for 113k on a V8.

Hope I haven't damaged the gearbox/transfer box -

anyway - with a 4.0 V8 what are the usual suspects for dumping this amount of oil - as I say I suspect it has been a dripping for a while but decided to get critical today, therefore I suspect a seal but can anyone point me in the right direction...I was thinking main crankshaft and I understand that's a gearbox out job - oh joy!

thanks in advance

Throw a hand full of stones under it! Anything you hit could be a suspect.
p38s leak like a sieve so best just get under it and follow the river
