Gidday,
New to this part of the website as i normally post in the Range rover section. However, i have a 110 flat deck 2.5 petrol and i have just bought a wrecked Disco 200TDI manual with the intention of swapping the motors over and convert my petrol 110 to diesel. Does anybody have any idea on which gearbox is in which, and the compatibility of engine mounts etc? My dream is that i can just pull the motor from the disco and drop it straight in to the 110, but i am sure it will not be that simple. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
The Disco is a 1993 200TDI, and My 110 is a 1988 2,5 petrol with a 5 speed full time 4wd.
Cheers.

Thanks Marmaduke i have just had a quick read and sounds easy enough. Not sure what gearbox is in the disco yet, but my 110 must have the Lt77. Which is the best gearbox of the two? are the transfer boxes interchangeable and should i fit the disco transfer box for a higher road speed?

Personally I'd stick with the gearbox that's in cos you know it's condition and a LT77 will handle the power of a 200tdi quite happily. The jury is out on swapping the transfer box, some people say it's the best mod they've done especially if using on dual carriageways or motorways others say it bogs a defender down especially if your towing or using oversized tyres. Personally I've got a 300tdi with a LT77 gearbox and normal defender transfer box but I think it's an itch I'll have to scratch one day and put a disco one in

Just been to pick up the disco and check out the engine and it's a chain drive engine does that mean it is still 2.5 TDI. I thought the T 200 TDI was a belt drive and Jen would this still be a good engine to fit to my 110
Thanks.

I popped the Bonnet and had a look underneath and it doesn't have the plastic cover up the front of the engine

Is the timing belt behind an aluminium cover? Do you have to remove the water pump to access it?

If it's a genuine 200tdi early disco it will have the LT77 gearbox and the engine swap is well covered by the links above. If you're not sure which engine is in the disco, google 200tdi and compare the photos to what you see.

I Have established it's an early Disco with LT77 gearbox and 200TDI engine so thats all good. I have now done a TK test (combustion leak ) and found that the chemical is turning greenish, not the full blown monty yellow so i am guessing that it may have a slight head gasket leak. Before i cough up for the vehicle i would like to know if these are prone to cracked heads or if i remove the cylinder head am i likely to be opening a can of worms or, are they bullet proof and i will just need to fit another head gasket. Any help appreciated.

Many things are called bomb proof but mine always seem to explode just after I've bought them.

Could be either but more likely to be head gasket, is there any pressure in water pipes or bubbles in the header tank?

Can't see any bubbles in header tank and didn't really let it get up to running temp to see if it pressurised the cooling system but head gasket if faulty is only minor at the moment though i would prefer to do the repair when the engine is out before i fit it to my 110. Just don't want to pull the head and find cracked head and big dollars.

I'd be inclined to let it get upto temperature and see then also check for water contamination on the dipstick and underneath the oil filler cap to see if there's anything resembling mayonnaise

Already checked for mayo on dipstick and under oil filler cap and non evident. Very little blow by from oil filler cap either.
