Hi I am new to the forum and have seen a lot on this but nothing concrete. I'm a coach mechanic so have a decent knowledge of all things mechanical. My car decided that it just wouldn't start on me one day. Luckily I was right next to my workshop so pushed it in the see what the issue was.

I assumed there was a fuel issue so had a little Google. Discovered that the fuel pumps can be an issue and so can the injectors. So here are some tips to diagnose the problems and sort it out by replacing the right part and to get all the info in one place. This is all my own meandering experience and feel free to add or correct.

My pre face lift Td4...

There are 3 fuel pumps on this. The main one and two others. One is located beneath the fuse bose and near the battery under the bonnet. It is in the filter housing and will have a pipe going in the top and one in the bottom.
The other is underneath the offside rear seat accessed through a plate which is held in by about 6 screws.

Problems...
If your vehicle won't start (my problem) then there is a good chance that it is one of these which is to blame. First test is to switch on the ignition and simple listen. They should both be making a buzzing noise which is the sound of the pump. If one isn't making a noise then investigate that one.

The pump under the bonnet.
If this one isnt making a noise then take the pipe off the top to confirm its not working (no fuel present when ignition on) If it isn't producing any fuel and isn't making any noise then replace it. If it is making a noise then it may not be the pump at fault.

The pump under the rear seat
If your front pump is making a sound but no fuel then check the rear pump. Take out the pipe closest the door with the arrow pointing out and switch on the ignition. There should be quite a bit of fuel present. If not then this is your problem.

Solutions
A simple test for power is the first test. If there is power then the pump needs replacing. I removed my rear pump stripped it down and cleaned it up then put it back and it came back to life. Ordered a new one but my landrover is back on the road for now with no expense.

I've now replaced both so any questions just ask.

The newer ones had away with the in tank pump and replaced the one at the front with one in the offside rear wheel arch.
Both bits can be bought on ebay for £50
 
Hi and welcome to the mad house!!
A note of caution. Be careful with £50 Ebay pumps. They are generally of low quality and last no time at all. There's been many cases of them failing in under 12 months;)
The other common non start cause on a TD4 is the high pressure fuel regulator O ring. If it splits or stops sealing, the engine won't start.
 
Yh it has 12 months warranty on it and my old one is still working. Think I may keep it in the boot with the tools needed to replace it. Its only a 5 minute job.
 
Gentlemen, do you have to bleed the fuel system after filter and pump replacement? I did repalce both (because of increasing noise of the original Pierburg one - 200k km) and now the pump spins over 10 sec till stop and the car do not start. Delphi diagnose says fuel pressure sensor. I repeat, the car ran perfect before, just increased lift pump noise made me change it.

Update: Apparently the car ran with only the lift pump working. Tank pump is not working, but the fuel line remained full and the system worked.
Considering the above, a cheap fix would be to put a manual rubberball fuel pump before the lift pump to ensure input for it till start.
