Hi,

I am having trouble starting my landrover freelander diesel when the engine in cold. The problem does not happen every time but it does occur at least once a day. The model is a TD4 2006 (old shape).

When the starting struggles, I may have to swing the engine 5 times before it springs to life. Then it sounds like a drunk while idling and a lot of grey smoke comes out the exhaust. Within minutes, the engine then becomes as normal as ever and it drives perfectly fine.

Another person (bikerblue11) on this site seems to have had the same trouble and replaced injectors, pump etc and the problem was still with him!!

Please help!.

If its running fine once it has started I would lean towards an injector. I had the same problem and an injector was the cause. Mine got so bad it wouldn't start at all unless I bunged a pile of easy start into the manifold and cranked it for about 10 seconds. Once it started it would run all day, until it was turned off and then it would only fire on easy start.

If its running once started with no hesitations I would think the fuel pump is fine. Check it's
Filter to make sure it's not clogged and perhaps check you egr & manifold to make sure it's not choked or blocked.

I'm having problems too,my car won't start unless sprayed with easy start, diagnostics showed low fuel pressure was told to change fuel pump and fuel filter still the same after they were replaced, guy said there was no fuel problems,he said needed new glow plugs replaced them too still the same, there is no smoke and runs smooth when started any one have any ideas what it could be thanks for your help

injectors, one or more faulty causing leak back. do a search for leak back or leak off test and all will be revealed. can do it yourself if you're a little spanner handy, or get the garage to do, no more than an hours labour.

good luck
