Old petrol landrover in France.
Its suddenly failed the pollution test gone to 11 should be 2.5 !
Uneaven firing bad tick over.
Air filter clean
Where should I start fellas?

I've had this a few times with the V8 in mine. I just leaned out the mix on the carbs for the purpose of MOT. But I think the issue was mostly me messing with things.
Odd that it has suddenly changed.
Do you use it regularly? (old fuel).

First thing would be to get the tick over sorted.
Has any work be done on it recently?
Check out the whole of the ignition and ensure the system is good. Then get into the fuel side it may involve dismantling of the carb and clean it before putting back together and setting up correctly.
If you have no luck there you may be looking at getting deeper into worn engine parts, strange it has gone up so suddenly,has it been stood, Or used regularly ?
What sort of level are your spanner skills and are you going to do this yourself.

Run the engine at night and look for any blue arcs around plugs and leads it’s a simple thing todo and often shows a lot.
Step by step but cheap basics first.

Assuming that you have not altered anything, leave the carburetor alone, if it is rough and miss-firing check over the ignition first.
There is no point trying to weaken the mixture if the ignition has a fault as you will be treating the symptom not the cause.
Assuming that you are still on points ignition I would first clean or replace the the points and try a new capacitor. Poor connections at the ignition coil can also cause poor ignition.
Marjon's suggestion of running the engine in the dark is a good tip.
If you still have points ignition you can also retro-fit the electronic ignition distributor fitted to later Austin-Rover "A" Series engines, although most Austin-Rover stuff is long gone.
If it is not firing properly, the un-burnt fuel would cause high emission readings.
Once you are certain that the ignition is 100% then clean the carb jets with carb cleaner.
 
As per above, sounds like an ignition fault, leave the carb alone for now. New points and plugs to start with - get the timing set properly. The 2.5 petrol should idle really smoothly. If you fancy treating it, fit electronic ignition.
 
Also check your exhaust for leaks. If its blowing it'll affect the emissions. I couldn't get my head round it, I thought if its letting gas out early then the reading would be lower. I had a Corsa that failed an MOT on emissions and it had a blowing exhaust, I fixed the exhaust and it flew through the retest.
 
Give it a proper service with new Points plugs distributer cap condenser and leads, new air filter, check the timing, check choke is not sticking on, clean carb, Butterfly jets linkages etc and make sure they are all free,
Make sure it is running correctly before retest and give it a good run to get it nice and warm before the test.
