Hi, my 1981 series lll petrol has not been started for a year, what should I change / replace before connecting the battery and turning the key?

small drop of oil down each bore (1/2 teaspoon at most) then turn over by hand without plugs.
(will oil the bores and hopefully if stuck rings they will free and not get damaged)
leave plugs out and crank on starter till oil light out-refit plugs and start

I left mine for about 18 months, checked oil and coolant levels, took a plug out to check there was still spark, found there was enough charge in the battery to turn it over (yeah - I was surprised too) and the bugger started! Ticked over nicely on three. Worth sticking some oil or redex in the bores and turning over by hand (check the oil feed to the rockers hasn't sludged up) before starting. Most of the problems I had were with the brakes.
