However I could really use some help. I have a 2004 l322 that needs either a new gearbox or this one refurbed.

Give saint as much info as you can and he may just save you a grand or two, if you run into Bemble on here he will most likely diagnose your problem by smell if you tell him roughly what compass bearing you are on from his house...

It's a diesel, 100k

Was driving it home from tewkesbury a few weeks back, and when warmed up the gearbox started slipping, the same sensation as when a clutch is slipping on a manual.

Once it cooled down it drove ok for a while.

Took it to a local guy who had a look. He took out the filter which he said was full of swarf where the gearbox was eating itself. He cleaned it and put it all back together. And advised that at some point soon I should either sell it quick or have a new gearbox fitted.

Drove home fine. But it's been sat on the driveway ever since as I don't have any confidence in it!

Since I don't have the kind of concience that would allow me to sell the car on knowing it has a fault, I have decided to get it sorted, hopefully in time for the winter ......

Don't use it anymore

You may just save the gearbox by changing the torque converter

Common failure milage too at 100k

Good luck

+1 hes right

'fraid so....

Sounds nasty, you may get away with a TQ change and new valve block, but you'll also need to change the oil cooler, hoses and give it a good flush.

Depending on the nature of the swarf will depend on if the clutch plates are being eaten due to the swarf in the fluid.

K motors in Lancashire can provide a replacement box and revised cooler etc....

Best of luck bud, I am afraid it sounds very much like bad news.

Can any of you guys suggest someone local to me that won't require a mortgage 😀

You could try contacting JPAT as they are an excellent supplier of spares and according to their site their site they do supply the GM spares for your box.
i spoke to them and asked if they could recommend somebody in my area which they did, although mine is the ZF. They also remanufacture torque converters.

Couple of interesting links below including a teardown of a GM box by Bemble (RRPhil)
