That's interesting, my copy of RAVE calls for changes every 30K miles for the ZF4HP22. Maybe that's because it's operating at it's torque limit:confused:

Yes, ZF recommend following the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications for fluid change intervals on the 4-speed.

I’m afraid that nothing much has changed regarding operating the transmissions at their torque limit. The 5HP24 was designed with a torque limit of 420Nm and the BMW M62 engine in the L322 produces 440Nm!

they dont fill for life for an engineering reason just to make service times and cost for them less ,they arent bothered about long life 6 years enough even manuals have seals on internal brgs so contaminated oil which it will be after a few years wont wear brgs out too quick ,but there not worth rebuilding when you strip them as everthing is damaged ,theres a lot of old landies on the road but these new ones wont be ,how difficult is it to change oil ,do customers really mind ,there no reason why they have to be throw away boxes, but thats what they want,a box run on fresh oil will outlast any filled for life

The problem is for some customers is the same as the classic and p38a owners if it changes gear and drives ignorance is bliss!
Me personally I offer the same as the old land rover service oil and filter every 2 years or 24,000miles at least it will be done and it will last longer
Of the ones that I have seen failed it is around the 70-100,000 mile mark when the oil is gone off and the seals fail

Absolutely must be done from 70,000 onwards.

Not expensive (c.£200).

Filter does not necessarily have to be changed as it is mainly a strainer so I understand. However to properly change ALL the oil, make sure it is flushed not just drained. I believe a few litres are still in the transmission on draining so to get a 100% oil change you would be best to do another one soon after. (see fullfatrr.com for more detailed info. Several of the guys have just done their own change.)
