Hi guys recently purchased a very very cheap 2004 l322 3.0 diesel, slapped a battery in and it fired up perfectly since then i have been on a cleaning / fixing rampage. i decided the other day it was time to fix the central locking remote so i got the key synced and could then lock and unlock (here is were the issues started). as soon as i did that the car would no longer start, i purchased a copy of land rover SDD (never got it working) after some advice from a friend i picked up a cheap BMW code reader and it read 100 million errors on the car

i cleared everything i could and tried to start the car again, no crank. i checked every fuse that everyone ever mentioned online (all good) narrowed my search down to the neutral/XYZ switch (code reader shows starter not enabled as car thinks its in gear even though gear lever doesn't say it is). i also noticed the selected gear was no no longer shown on the dash (only if you push it over to manual does first gear light up, running a test on the instrument cluster shows the lights do work)

so now i had something to go on, after some more aggressive googling i came up with the mysterious safety switch, so i dived under the car to take a look and i cannot for the life of me find it, the electrical plug appears to go direct into the gearbox. Also the steering wheel seems to half unlock now not fully (you can move it but its very very tight)

so has anyone got any ideas as to if the XYZ switch was put inside the gearbox at any time?

Are those codes from before or after you cleared them?
Also which BMW software are you using?

Top is before i cleared (was running at that point) and still some remaining after, but bottom is after (No longer running)
Software is BMW scanner 1.4.0

A lot of those codes could be historic what codes are still showing?
The BMW scanner isn't specifically for the LR software versions so it may be reading some incorrectly.

So grabbed some more readings, cleared all errors i could (2 left on the engine are for glow plugs (not surprising really given the amount the ignition has been on in the past few weeks)

No errors on the gearbox or transfer box (only gearbox screenshotted)

Still no gear display on the dash

did another test on the instrument cluster to check the lights were 100% working

so if there is nothing reported wrong with the gearbox im not really sure were to go from here

You've not got the fuse in that puts the transmission into neutral for towing have you? I don't think that'll stop it cranking and I'm sorry, I can't think which fuse it is but it's in the fusebox on the passenger side.

37 i think, its always been in the car while ive had it, tried pulling it seemed to make no difference

Well that in itself isn't right! - and may be a pointer to your issues. I don't have any wiring diagrams for that model year, if you have access to one, it may be worth checking the electrical connections and voltages external to the transmission.

Disconnected the shifter cable and manually moved it through all the settings still the same with nothing on the dash
