Hi all I’m new to this site and I have a problem with my Range Rover l322 4.4 v8 diesel 2011 and hoping for help to see if I’m on the rite track.
Only had the car a month.
All started on Thursday when on holiday and was a very hot day driving back from the beach and stopped to fill the tank up. There was quarter of a tank of fuel in and filled it to the top. When I started up to drive of the gauge read totally empty with fuel light on. I knew there was a full tank in so my thought was the float could of cracked with putting cold fuel in on a red hot day (30°) and now not floating or a wire came of. Thought nothing of it all running find so carried on are way. On Sunday when on are way home with the caravan was all good till on the motorway and engine started missing then cut out, pulled over start up no problem would run for 2 minuets then stop again every 2 minuets. Made it to service station then got taken home by the AA. So tonight I have looked in the fuel tank and both floats are fine. I’m now thinking it could be a wire on the pump but before I commit to sticking my arms in tank to get the pump out has anyone else had this before or am I on the wrong track????

I thought that it was the ecu cutting the engine out cos it thinks it has no fuel in but the AA man said no he had never come across a car that does that .
 
The engine ecu cuts the engine when it thinks fuel is low to prevent the system needing bleeding if it runs out of fuel.

There’s a few things to check here - the transfer pump across the tank, fuel gauge wiring in the tank and the resistance of the senders at different fuel levels and if they are free to move

Thats what I was thinking. I’m gonna drain the fuel tonight and pull the pumps out and check the wiring. Will keep you posted thank you
 
So good news tuck out the pump and saddle pump tonight couldn’t see anything wrong. Test both floats with multimeter up and down working fine. Thought problem must be somewhere else and built everything back up tried it and it’s fixed I have fuel gauge again and car runs mint again. Not clue what it was fingers crossed it never happens again :)
