well Ive done a bit of messing with the fuel pump and now I get around 44mpg. Is that good? Before I messed around with it I was getting about 35-38. What do other people get from their l series?
 
Pump timing makes a massive difference on the L series. My Rover 400 SDI would do 60+ mpg but only after a lot of careful pump adjustment.
I'd say you are probably pretty spot on with yours.
 
I had a rover 45 L series which did around 60mpg, it's the reason I got a freelander with an L series! I love that engine!! :)

The L series is/ was a good engine.
Power and economy in one package!! It was a shame it became non compliant :(
 
I think 44mpg is really good. Im averaging 'bout 40 on mine, but i got a big roof box on that probably makes some difference.
 
once I was sure the timing was correct I put a fine mark between the pump body and the top in case I needed to put it back to original then loosened the top control unit part of the pump slightly, then tap to the right for less fuel and to the left for more fuel. too far either way and it could not start or run right so its all about finding a balance, I went to far to the right and ended up with a flat spot so just another gentle tap and hey presto it runs spot on but with slightly better fuel economy :) happy days

does this cause any smoke when cold or anything...

just asking as if someone done this could it be causing my smoking problem
 
I just filled by L Series after 585KMs around town and it took 47.5L - so thats 8.1 L/100KMs or 34.7MPG.

The previous tank was 65KMs around town and 550 on the open road and was 46L. Presumably the around town bit was 8.1 * 0.65 = 5.265L, so the open road was 40.735L / 5.5 = 7.4 L/100KMs or 38.1MPG.

So, spot on to Kev's findings - and it looks like I should search for the hammer mod :)

I just got back from a fishing trip with my son - just an overnight, left yesterday afternoon. But the reception at the digs we were staying at closed at 7PM - so I had to hammer it down there. We'd done 150KMs round town on the tank before the trip and when I filled up this morning it was on 450KMs and took 37L - so 8.2/100KMs or 34.4MPG.

So going by my stats above, I recon 'hammering it' as opposed to 'leisurely' has cost me about 4MPG - or 2.4L of fuel - or $3.60 - or £1.80 . My version of 'hammering it', probably was another 10KMH top speed, but getting to that speed faster and keeping nearer to it on the hilly/twisty bits, which was about 1/3rd of the journey.

We pulled up outside the place at 6:57PM :)

It was a small 37L fill up because the next reasonably priced petrol was over an hour away, maybe 1 1/2 hours.
 
Can you adjust the pump on a TD4 then?

I dream of over 40mpg in my auto.

since fitting a synergy box, on setting 3 with a bosch maf, the normal mods, ie egr bypass, bmw crankcase mod, etc i get around 40 mpg on a run

mines a td4 auto as well, found number 3 ideal for the auto box

around town will drop between 32-36 mpg

that's running with the cruise control on around 68 mph in getting 40 mpg

plus my hawkeye in once a month to just monitor any dtcs etc

would like to fit a scangauge but as mines a 2002 belive it won't work as its pre obd2 compliant

I'm around 30 31 but I'm carrying a lot of tools and weight about... And an extremely heavy foot lol

I used to get late 30's to early 40's in my l series. Never tweaked the pump though.
It was on my list of things to do untill my cambelt tweaked my engine
