Hi everyone, New to forum and looking for your advice....

I have a 1999 2.0 Diesel Freelander XEDI and have the following problem:

When doing tight right turns (ie aound mini roundabouts) I get a knocking noise sounding like i'm driving over cobbles coming from rear left. Also when I go over bumps in the road I get a knocking noise that sounds like a loose exhaust box banging but it is not the exhaust.

I asked Landrover and they suggested rear diff has gone and to change diff and drive shaft to the tune of £1400! I have asked about and others have suggested that the viscous coupling may have seized and the diff has paid the price and should only need to change the coupling and diff.

I would like to know if anyine else has had similar problem, what was diagnosis and the cure.....AND how hard did it hit the wallet?????

Thank you very much for replying so quick. I am not mechanically minded and I was wondering, these possible faults - are they large faults, very serious, hard or expensive to repair??

Cracked subframe mount sounds scary...

rear diff mounts easy and relatively cheap
chassis cracks - easy but its a professional?(garage) job
VCU expensive but easy
