Hi all,
When I put my defender into reverse today I started to hear a knocking sound coming from the transfer box/handbrake drum. I took the middle inspection panel out and when I was reversing and looking at the transfer box the handbrake drum seemed to be catching but I thought it was would how it wasn’t catching when I was going forward. Any one got any ideas on why this is happening before I take the prop off and have look.

Thanks Sam

I had something similar and turned out the brake shoes in the drum needed re- alignment
Replaced the shoes and all the little clips and springs and all good to go

maybe take the pressure off the shoes by adjusting the adjuster at the bottom of the brake drum off and see what happens

cant remember which direction the adjuster nut needs to turn

If you screw it in, away from the engine, it pushes the shoes further apart, whereas if you screw it out, towards the engine it allows the springs to pull them closer together and hence off the drum.

I've had some funny noises off Land Rover handbrakes when the friction material starts to separate from the metal part of the shoes a little, and drags on the drum. It's usually time for new shoes when that happens.
