I am hoping the LZ collective can answer this? I have issues with re-syncing my key after removing the battery, and have since found one of the previous owners has changed the drivers door handle, which means I cannot lock the car with the ignition key (and re-sync the key so I can use the fob)
I have another drivers door handle with key, so I can change that and lock the car, my question can I change the ignition barrel for the 'new' key, and will it work with the BECM?
I hope this makes sense 😁

So you don't actually have a key that fits your door currently?
Not so much, I have owned the car for a couple of months, and prior to removing the battery the CL worked on the fob, I didn't try the key in the door, just assumed it worked. I feel slightly soopid but I do now have a door handle/lock, key and ignition switch from a scrap car

You can just swap the key blade over. Keep your original fob & just swap the blade over. You can swap the ignition barrel & door handle with no problem.

Brilliant, many thanks Rick. Stupid question No 325, what is the coil around the ignition barrel and small circuit board for?

Usually on cars that picks up a code from a transponder in the key and compares it to the one in memory to allow the car to be started. I assume the Rangie is similar. Did you check the RF receiver under the rear parcel shelf was connected?

post #3 said the central locking worked with the fob.;):)

Many thanks for the help peeps, changed the door handle, synced the key and all is good, I now have remote locking 👏🏻

Fob batteries gone?

The petrol rolls the security code on each ignition for each fob, doesn't it?
From RAVE:

On vehicles up to 97MY, resynchronisation is
achieved by locking or unlocking the driver’s door
using the vehicle key with 30 seconds of locking,
superlocking or unlocking using the remote handset.

The BeCM monitors the condition of the driver’s door
CDL switch to initiate the resynchronisation.

On vehicles from 97MY, friendly resynchronisation
was introduced on vehicles with passive
immobilisation. A remote handset that is not
synchronised to the BeCM will automatically be
resynchronised when the key is inserted in the ignition
without using the vehicle key or Emergency Key
Access (EKA) procedure.

The resynchronisation uses a pick-up coil in the
remote handset and a passive coil located around the
ignition barrel. The passive coil provides a signal for
the remote handset to transmit an unlock signal to
remobilise the vehicle.

That last bit sounds like the key-fob gets reprogrammed from the engine mangement system when you put it in the barrel and then it transmits to the RF and the BECM gets a valid code. Presumably you have to press the button to transmit the new code? I've never really played with the petrol security though.

The FOB does not get re-programmed as you put it, it's just a re-sync of the rolling lock code with the BECM, not the engine ECU. No need to press any button.
