I'm not sure if this was a good idea, though.

Lovely to drive, not as barge-like as I expected.

However, she whines quite badly on the overrun, and I get a constant scraping noise when moving, exactly like someone sharpening a knife on a whetstone, but doesn't stop. It doesn't vary with roadspeed, it's present in neutral whilst coasting, doesn't alter if I turn or brake.

I have a warranty, luckily, and I will maintain it myself afterward (I'm good with a spanner, I also run and maintain a '94 XJ6 successfully).

Anyone here got definitive answers on where I start taking things to bits?

Thanks,

it could be at the top front of the engine you have an idling tension wheel for one of the drive belts. im not too technically minded but i do know it went on mine and trying to locate the noise was a nightmare in itself...basically see if you have any play in it.
squeaks are often teerrors to locate...last night driving home i heard one and developed that pit in the stomach feeling of how much will it cost....it turned out to be the dog guard nut coming loose...no problem this time !
