My daughter wanted a horse riding lesson...Idiot that I am agreed. now three years later with two ponies a trailer that isnt big enough A Honda CRV that wouldn't pull a dead cat out of a muddy field I find myself the owner of a Discovery ., of sorts...

The ES is supposed to have electric seats, this doesnt. it doesnt say Discovery or TDI on the rear door either. The cruise control doesnt work The air con doesnt work and it has all the pulling power of a dead donkey .

Driving out of Glossop it never manages more than 30 mph on the hills, on the motorway with a very big stick and a lot of down hill it might reach 70 mph however reluctantly and short of dropping a petrol bomb through the sun roof at Midnight I am not sure what to do with it .

It doesnt seem to smoke , it sounds like the distant wailing of a police siren is coming from under the vast acres of bonnet it hisses like there is a serious gas leak somewhere and it only stops with about 3 weeks notice in writing.

Where do I start to get this pig of a vehicle doing what discoverys' should do ?

Discoverys should pull ok as long as you do not exceed the towing weight as explained in the manual or if you dont have a manual then you should be able to find it's towing weight on the internet or even LR.

The aircon seems to be a common problem, yours may only need regassing a good land rover specialist will do this for you for around £60 ish.

Is it by any chance automatic ? if so then the gearbox needs a good service.

What year is it ? as you seem to have, like me, bought a bad one.

The stopping sounds a bit like my Range Rover (mine had no brakes only little metal plates where the brakes were supposed to be) Check the calipers for seizure and condition. also get the fluid changed.

Cruise control seems to be a common fault with most LR's

Is it Petrol or Diesel ?

I would get it into a Garage as soon as (less you have the knowledge to do it yourself like me it saves an extreme amount of money and you don't pay VAT)

as i wild guess the noise from under the bonnet may be coming from the radiator presure cap sometimes the do make a siren noise when the engine is over heating ..


but like i stated that is just a wild stab in the dark , i would deff get a garage to look at it asap

as for the pulling power and the noises under bonnet as a quick guess i would start looking at the condition of your intercooler pipes and connections the hissing could be that one has come loose or has a leak in pipe dont over tighten the jubilee clips when replacing this would also effect your pulling power take a look at intercooler for signs damage or even blocked with mud ect... check codition and replace if needed your air filter and check all brakes callipers and servo check servo pipework also for damage i found in mine a pin hole is only bit rubber tubing but can cause so much grief if leaking hope this helps a little regards colin

I'm with colin on this one. I have an auto Disco ES and although it won't break the land speed record, it does pull ok. The later autos have an electronic ignition boostion them up to 130bhp to turn the auto box. When i got mine it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding and coward at the sight of a hill!! A quick feel around under the bonnet found a damage intercooler pipe. £15 quid for a new one and all was well.
Sounds to me like you might have the same problem.... Had i known i could have sold you a decent one!!
Mine also had a problem with the cruise, again a new vac pipe was needed, now its fine. As for leather seats??? thats a must!! if it aint got em, they've been whipped or it's not an ES!!!

Well the intercooler top hose was split but even fixing that didnt cure the lack of power. The rear brake calipers were seized.. yes on both sides however they were off not on... (so much for having a one month old MOT)

There is oil leaking from the turbo area but that was supposed to have been replaced 4000 miles ago ( I traced the previous owner from the log book).

Have had all the fuel filters changed , sedementor cleaned etc.

Could this be related to gear box? Think after 3 days in the Garage this chap has experimented with anything and everything.. so maybe I need a different Landy engineer to examine it.

I live in north Derbyshire ..any one got any Ideas?
