Evening,

Neighbour has just bought a 89 300tdi converted 110 overlander,

in 20 minutes he wished he never touched it, however he has already fallen in love with it,

His chassis is ruined, out riggers are either gone on on the verge of falling off,

For his benefit, can ou get replacement center sections (goes under the rear seats) for across the width of the chassis ?

Pretty sure that alone in an MOT failure, of which its only had for 3 days !

Told him to get on here sharpish but said i would find out if there's any hope for his chassis, will try and get pictures if theres problems IDing the part I'm asking about,

He may have to buy a 1/2 chassis and cut the bit out that he needs. Photo would help though.

that bit is not available separately, I wanted one and tried everywhere.

Basically he bought a crock of ****e,

suggested as the MOT is only a few days old he get the DVLA involved,

To be frank, I was shocked when going over an outrigger that I could push my thumb though it with little resistance (resulting in a hole)

If its the part I am thinking of...then I got one about a year ago from Land Rover Defender 110/Station Wagon Mid Crossmember pre tdci (2007) - YRM Metal Solutions

ignore the box section bit but the support does rot out and as far as i know cannot be swopped with body in place unless u chop in half

If he bought it from a garage take it back ,any serious faults in the first few weekswere deemed to be there at the point of purchase.

Holes in the chassis are a reasonable request for a refund or repair by them.
When you buy a second hand car from a dealer, you have the right, under the Sale of Goods Act, to expect the car to:
be of satisfactory quality (taking into account its age and mileage)
meet any description given to you when you were buying it ( whether in the advert or in discussions prior to sale)
be fit for the purpose (for example, to get you from A to B safely).
If the second hand car does not meet these requirements, you have a right to claim against the dealer for breach of contract.
If something you buy is not 'as described', or if the seller is guilty of misrepresentation, you are entitled to:
give the second hand car back and get your money back, or
if you want to keep the car, ask for compensation (usually the cost of any repairs it needs)
But, if you buy a second hand car that was not described as being in excellent condition or good working order, and it breaks soon after you buy it, you don't have any right to reject it, or to claim compensation.

As 'Wack' says, but if the purchaser is going to go down this route it needs to be before he carries out any form of repairs. Also get VOSA involved as, from the description, the LR obviously should never have gained an MOT

Ive just been through this very process with a bucket of a pajero I bought from a different part of the country!!

MOT'd on the 1st sept, picked up on the 2nd Sept. Wheel alignment was so badly out I took it to my pals to get it adjusted on the 3rd and when it was up my pal and I found several MOT fails 2 days after its test.......I though "why should I be using my hard earned cash to make it roadworthy!!"

So I phoned Trading Standards and VOSA, trading standards told me about the statutory 3 months warranty you get by law when buying from a second hand dealer they say because its not fit for purpose and not road worthy ive a really good chance of getting my money back, they then told me to get it independently inspected (pre MOT inspection)
VOSA told me the same about the inspection then after that get it booked in......

Got it inspected and the garage that inspected found 17 MOT failures.....

I phoned the garage that firstly MOT'd it.......told them about the inspection......Trading Standards and VOSA and within an hour of that phone call that garage had bought it off me and money was transferred into my account with a click of the fingers

I've suggested that he make get a mot test done on it by another garage (one I trust at least) then make a list of whats wrong with then try and get them to pay for the repairs

No not an MOT! a Pre MOT inspection is what he needs.

When I phoned VOSA they made it very clear not to get an MOT just the inspection

Did he pay for any part of it on a credit card?

If he did contact the card company and tell them you want to make a section 75 claim.

As well as complaining to trading standards

And any trade association the garage are in.

He needs to get as many people on the stealers back as possible as it makes giving him a refund the easiest way out.

Will send him a link to this, much of it is going over my head,

But think its fair to say he's got a good case against whoever sold it to him,

Took him on some light green laning, most of the chassis looks ok, stood up to a hammer,

The out riggers and body supports though look ropey !
