Just picked up our 72 s3 2.25 petrol. Couple of questions...it ticks over ok but when you come to a halt at a junction it wants to, and sometimes dies.
Secondly, without the fairey overdrive engaged, pulling away in first felt like the crawler gear in an old Scania 142 I used to drive. I engaged the overdrive and just left it in all the way home, is that ok? It drove fine like that but f_ _k was it noisey. Mind you, it was noisey even with it disengaged.
Is this the norm to be so noisey, I figured a motor that old with all them gearboxes so close to you in the front its gonna be a bit loud.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Other than that, we're well pleased!

i wouldn't leave the o/d engaged all the time i did and me o/d went pop it cant handel the torque of first gear although having a petrol it might not be as bad on yours

A number of things do this
Your tick over is set too low or your carb is icing (Not this time of year) or your carb needs a servicing (Air leak blocked / worn jets etc)

crawler gear
As Spyderman check your knob positions
Red forward (Hi ratio 2wd) yellow up (2wd).

These arnt the quietest car on the road but the following usual quietens things up.
If you have freewheeling hubs set them to 2wd for normal road use.
check your drive shafts UJ's and do all the oils and grease nipples.
Set your tappets gap and while you have the feelers out you might as well do the plugs and points.

Ps
At 60mph you want ear plugs in my Landy.

i will have yu know i got 65 outta the Dibnah coming down kempshot hill - and yup i needed ear plugs.

Thanks for all the info, will get out there and check me knobs!! Think I may aswell take off the carb while I'm there and give it a once over.

One last thing though, when I turn the key to start it, it spins over nicely but doesnt seem to want to start, then when you release the key it fires up. I know releasing the key to start would be the obvios answer but it doesnt seem right and really goes against the grain of what I am used to starting anything with an ignition key. Would there be an answer to this?

Or you've got one of Grunts prototype glowplug/starter delay thingies accidentally fixed to yer petrol motor ;)

ere wots wrong wiv doin 65+mph in a s3? on me way back from nor**** i had nearly 70 according to the speedo in the car next to me (chitroen C3 i fink)

aye we used to get LW's up ti that speed on a good down hill run but they dint like it and neither dint the passengers in the back

Make sure it's the correct IGN switch first!

If it's the wrong one this will always happen.

Get under the bonnet with a 12 volt testlamp, and make sure the live wire to the coil (NOT the one that goes to the points in the distributor) stays live (test lamp stays lit) WHILE THE STARTER MOTOR IS WHIRLING.
