I brought a half#*%ds green metal one last year 20l and it held petrol no issue.
It is as good as the ex mod 1 I have.

Take it back:)

From OP description it sounds like the rubber gasket in the spout is missing.

Ex MoD ones on eBay. They are cheaper but worth a go. Otherwise try the likes of the ex MoD disposal websites.

It’s a super simple design. Shouldn’t be any issue from a Halfords one. Take it back.

Ive had a couple of metal jerry cans that have leaked fuel when trying to pour it, even when I changed the rubber gasket. I then bought a plastic 20litre one and that leaks on pouring anorl but at least it's lighter.

I've got ex-mod ones, with appropriate metal spout. They work a treat with no leaks, much nicer than civvie new ones with silly plastic spouts

I have about 20 cans, picked up from boot sales and the like.

They're not all the same. The spouts all look the same until you look at them close, but they're not identical and the spout I have does not seal properly on every type. One it won't even lock on to.

When the British Army went all silly with diesel power they ditched thousands of perfectly serviceable jerry cans. Being connected with the TA at the time I had a quiet word with the 'Q' & requisitioned a few for myself ;) They are long gone now, along with the vehicles they served.

I know the feeling, my jerry can is like that. Fcking **** thing. You have to literally hold it without resting the nozzle against the fuel inlet or it drips out from the seal! I miss my genuine German Jerry cans....
