You are supposed to use the towing eyes in the bumpers front and back. Rumour has it that you can suspend the whole vehicle from these if you had to!
I attach a carabiner to these and pass the rope or strop through that. I wouldn't use the tow hitch which is designed for a relatively light load in one direction.Happyhippo

OK depends on what the load is. If being pulled out use a shackle! Lashing eyes are not the same as the towing rings on a freelander. lashing eyes on the sub frame should never be used but the towing rings were designed for recovery.

PM643 Pro Comp Recovery Strap. 2in x 30foot. 20,000lb rating.
Lifting and Crane 10mm Commercial Bow Shackle - Machine Mart
You’ll have to visit and check the size of the shackle. Not sure if I picked the one off the list that fits. The normal 4.5 ton shackles wont go through a Freelander towing eye.

if you think that the tow bar is the way to go (used mine a couple of times in that way) it's worth changing it from a 50mm ball to the ball and pin type, so the strop is less likely to slip off.
