Hi all, just managed to limp home after a logging trip pulling about 2.5t trailer and logs. Struggled to get up hill unless I put it into 2nd with foot to the floor. Noticed a slight knocking after that ,that got progressively worse with time along with reduced power. Thought I'd have to stop and ring the AA but I made it. On reaching home I found it to be emitting grey smoke. I've had to put in 2 pints of water to get the coolant level back and it's got a sort of tappety top end noise. I did some investigations and found oil in the injection loom to the ECU. Luckily I had a spare room, fitted it and cleaned out all of the connections. Also checked the resistance of each injector, 10 ohms or so anc checked the continuity from injection plugs to ecu, 6 ohms on all cores. I've removed all injector to send for overhaul and I thought I'd do a compression test but my kit doesnt have any adapters for td5 injectors. So guys, do you think I've lost the head gasket? Would that cause a metallic top end knocking?

Ok, after looking in the manual it doesnt look so hard but on the car they look as if they are a bitch! I checked the injection rockets first, took of the rockets and shaft, nothing untoward and then put it back and set up the clearances. No change in noise. I let it idle for a few minutes, noticed the exhaust manifold is leaking, bottom right stud is missing!. I put a trace of water on each branch outlet, all evaporated apart from no.4. I'll do the comp test later today

Just started to remove the plugs, no 4 was covered in what looked like black engine oil, or was that more likely cooked unburnt diesel?

Sorry i misread what you said, i thought you had diesel leaking externally.
If that happens then like you say, it cooks, goes sludgy and eventually can bake rock hard. When it's external it can mean you're not able to extract the injector without major grief

Well I've tried to get all of the glow plugs out, 4 and 3 weren't bad, 2 was a bitch ,not a chance with 1, too much stuff in the way. Did a test on 3 and 4 ,4 was 34bar, 3 was 25bar, couldn't get the hose on the glow plug adapter for no.2. I read on another forum that one poster could get them all out in 30 minutes, sorry not a chance, been at it for 2 hours for 3. Also the electrical connection on all the glow plugs just fell apart so is that part of the loom available as a spare? Anyway, the one bad reading is enough to warrant removing the head.

Warra great way to blow up a Disco, not pouncing round in mud, or worse getting stuck on a kerb at Waitrose but hauling a logging trailer - I haven't ever read many freds about freelanders attempting to blow themselves up doing a mans job ;) In my case, anything heavier than a 6x4 trailer full of feathers and I would have ripped the rear crossmember of my ole Defenderer. Got luck gerringher back ont rurd.

Not an issue on this one, I welded in a new 1/2 galv chassis just after Christmas but that's not helping me now.
At the moment I've got the exhaust manifold off, cylinder 5 is wet with diesel, 3 was ok even though the comp test showed it low

Finally got the inlet manifold off, what a job! Did the comp test on cyls 1-4 and got 30/32 bar across them all. Looks like the low test on 3 yesterday was the battery. Did the test today with a boost charge after each test, just shows never take a bad test on face value, check it again. Doesn't really help me much anyway as the issue is with pot 5 and you cant test that! Speaking to an ex garage mechanic at work he says it sounds like diesel knock as I first suspected but no diesel workshops are open with this covid thing to get the injectors checked

Latest update, head is with the engineers being checked, just dropped the injectors off for testing/checking, £15 each, what a bargain! Just sat around waiting now

Latest is that the people who had the injectors cant do anything at the moment as all their people who know these injectors are off on furlough. No news about the head yet. Started to clean off the block and found that no5 piston seemed to have excessive clearance somewhere. On turning the crank the crown never made it past about 1mm below the block surface and on changing direction there was a pause where it didn't move even though the crank was. Stripped off the sump and oil pump assembly. Found no5 big end bearing was like a sausage in a top hat and the journal was scored. Needs to come out for a regrind but why only one journal?
