I would take it back to the shop, if they test it and its still ok I would say they haven't diagnosed the problem. If it isn't ok e.g. if the regulator has gone again something on the car must be damaging it.

Make sure both + and S wires are connected to the starter solenoid - both connect to the thick wire from the battery. Check battery live and earth connections - both ends. What voltage are you getting at the battery with the engine running?
Might be worth taking the vehicle to the auto electricians and get them to look at the whole system not just the alternator.
....and please follow forum etiquette - start in the "introduce yourself" section and give us some details - WHAT series 3?

My light used to go out straight away a few months ago. Now it takes a bigger and longer rev than ever.

Might be on its way out..............

Bleedin money pit. :D

Mind you, needing to rev hard sounds more like brushes than regulator. £20 for a complete overhaul kit, a fiver for a new reg. £50 a new alternator. Cheap motoring.

I have managed to pour copious amounts of diesel over it several times during the rebuild. :D

I wouldnt mind upgrading it to give a bit more vollyohmamps. Just sounds too much like voodoo.

Easy enough to fit a bigger one - which one have you got?

Its a round one. Sort of silvery colour. Smells like diesel.

I dont trust anything you cant see, smell or will run uphill. Electrickery aint my strong point, or have you already guessed that.
