....picked it up from my local landy guy who took it off another clients' defender and installed it on mine. In the process of cleaning it up and changing the cable for a rope when I realised it doesn't look right to have the cables coming in from the front and the little screws securing the motor bracket on the back where you can't get to them. Am I right that it's on the wrong way round?

Cables in front and the fact the name on the motor is backwards leads me to say Yes. I don't have a winch though so you need more opinions.

LOL, yes it is, from the way they are normally fitted.

You find most have the clutch on the RH as you look at the front of the vehicle, So all the wires are at the rear.

Was your mechanic having a bad day?

I have posted a few times on here and it seems people like to take the p1ss when someone isn't an expert, not sure why my winch being on backwards is so amusing. Thanks Neilly and George for setting me in the right direction though.

If he took it off a customers vehicle and fitted it to yours if I was you I'd be looking to change my mechanic...

Do you have an isolator on the main feed wire?

For what it's worth, the winch was attached to the bar and he installed everything together, so I am sure didn't notice the winch was on back to front. I only noticed it when changing the cable for a rope. It's a well known Defender specialist and one I have been using for years and have no concerns.
There is an isolator.

Then as it has an isolator, make sure it is isolated and there are no other 12V supplies , disconnect the 12V and earth cables, then it should be a case of 4 bolts on the bottom and swap it around or take it back and ask them to do it.

Not a big problem to fix.

Thanks. I have no issue turning it around but what sort of bothers me is, if the winch is currently working correctly when attached a$$ backwards, spooling from the bottom as it should, then surely it's working against the brake. Maybe my ignorance is causing me to make a mountain out of a molehill....

Have you asked your mechanic if he put it like that for a specific reason that we can’t see in the photo?

Actually I did earlier. His reply was that the Defender it came off had a/c and the cables were fouling on the grille, so it needed to go this way around. He said he didn't do the original installation.
If it's not dangerous or badly wrong I am minded to leave it as is, just having the cables at the front doesn't feel right. I assume if I turn it around I need to reverse the direction of the drum or the rope will feed from the top?

Try it something lightish like a log see if it operates correctly that’s the main thing. You could get/make a cover for the cables, you can always turn it round if you don’t have AC and see difference?

Its called light hearted humour, why are you taking offence when you didn't fit the winch in the first place.

Before I realised it is on backwards I tested it using a friendly tree...it worked fine. Rigging a cover for the cables isn't a bad idea. Let's see how it goes, this has all been very helpful information, thank you.

I can't see who installed it has anything to do with this, I wasn't looking to "blame" anyone and I certainly didn't take offence, merely expressed mild irritation at being laughed at for asking a straightforward question. Now you roll your eyes at me....classy.

Maybe take a look at how others have tried to help and be informative and how it's possible to have friendly and civilised exchanges?
