Have had my 1989 v8 110 just 6 days and already there is a leak coming from my radiator. A bit gutted to say the least, was hoping that after laying out the cost for purchase and some seatbelts for the children that it would be hassle free motoring for a while, but no .... just my luck. Spotted a rather suspicious looking drip of what looked like anti freeze just under the front bumper, and noticed she runs fairly hot. Being LPG figured this might be normal but no, once the leak was spotted - all points to the rad really as there is nothing else from there that can leak. Popped it along to the garage this morning and they confirmed it - anyone know the cost of a new rad plus fitting?:(

Is there likely to more bad luck coming my way after this??!!??:eek::confused:
 
when you buy a land rover it is never trouble free motoring well i have never seen it yet spent 12k on my classic in the first 3 years had a year off then found more bits had it 8 years and last year was good but i hardly drove it 1500 miles between mot's serviced it this year and already spent £1250 without trying!!!

V8's need love!! You need to feed them lots of fuel, they need their oil and filters changed at least every 5,000 miles, they like good quality ignition parts and throw tantrums if the battery and alternator aren't strong.

Anyway, a new rad won't be cheap. It might be better to look into getting the existing one re-cored although that might mean you'll be without a car for a couple of days but you might want to look into it.

Check the costs, I recently did the same comparison for my RRC & the re-core came out the dearest & I wasn't looking for the cheapest new rad either.
 
Thanks for that then. Best raid the piggy bank now then (and that of the children come to think of it). Do V8's or any Landy for that matter, seem to last longer and be less trouble if they are run regularly or does it not make any difference. This is really going to be an every day run around vehicle covering around 150 miles a week in various journeys of about 10 miles. Do v8's last around the 150k mark like the td's tend too??

it depends how often the oil has been changed in the past , like kev says needs to be every 5k miles or less as the cam etc wear out quick with dirty oil.

I have spent 3k on my classic in a year and its no mint peach either :doh:

Get used to it an enjoy it when it works :)
 
I knew it wasn't going to be a cheap toy but a burning ambition to own a fantastic vehicle has at least been achieved. I guess I will just have to take the rough with the smooth and like you guys have said, love her when she works!!

We seem to have had alot of ladies on here recently, must be the weather making them buy landies lol

It has to be born in mind that the design of these engines dates from the 'sixties' & modern day service intervals of between 12 & 20K do not apply! Land Rover states oil & filter changes at 6K intervals but those of us 'in the know' change it at 3K, also drain & replace the coolant (with 50percent anti-freeze) every 2 years. Properly looked after there is no reason for a V8 not to still be giving sterling service at 200K, my last 3.5efi had done 160K & was still using less than a litre of oil between services.
