Just bought a 1999 1.8 freelander.

There was a whistling/squeaking noise when I put my foot on the clutch.
Thrust bearing I figured.

I thought it would be ok for a while until I got round to changing it. Anyway, long story short...It lasted all of 5 miles.

The car carried on driving but I couldn't change gear.
I stopped it and it would go into gear then. But when running it won't.
If I start it in gear, it will drive, but I'm unable to get it out of gear then.

Thrust bearing collapsed???

If so, it's a gearbox off, change the whole clutch malarky right?

Or could it be something else?

Does the pedal feel normal? They suffer from a stiff operating lever which causes the hydraulics to fail.

Pedal seems ok. Although I haven't driven a freelander before.
Would hydraulics make a whistling/whining sound when the pedal was pressed though?
 
Sounds like the bearing collapsed! The release arm seizes and leaves it in contact all the time until it falls to pieces:D

So just a new clutch and thrust, or might there be more stuff I need to sort out while its all off?

The TC light and ABS lights were on too. This isn't anything connected at all though right?
Brakes and Tractin control can be sorted again. Just want to get this clutch right.

For Abs/ TC lights do a search for "3 Amego,s"
The clutch mech seizes up. This strains the hydraulics but as DD says, also keeps the release bearing against the clutch so causing it to overheat and fail. A new clutch kit and correct lubrication of the whole release mechanism should sore it out ;)

I don't suppose anyone knows of a good step by step guide on changing the clutch?
I've had a look through the forum but can't seem to find one for the 1.8 petrol.

Just tried moving the truck and realised the clutch pedal is solid. Not sure if it was like that before it actually went, as my mate was driving it.

Does this change matters as far as the job goes?
