My search for a 101 is now becoming more serious so, are there any points that really need to be checked prior to diving in that could lead to even more grey hairs and bitten nails if missed prior to handing over the readies?
I'm leaning more towards a nambulance than a GS

Usual Land Rover points, check the chassis, unique to the 101 and usually undersealed from new by the army. Check there is no rot underneath the underseal, trapping in moisture. The LT 95 gearbox are the strongest Land Rover ever made but they might be noisy if oil hasn't been changed regularly or cheap/incorrect oil grade has been used. Propshafts rumble on over-run, this is normal but check UJs for wear. The Rover V8 is a classic but again likes regular oil changes. There is a mountain of stuff on the net for things to check on them. Doortops look similar to series ones but are slightly smaller so allow for extra expense if these are shot. I've never had an ambulance so they might have peculiarities of their own. Get one - its the most fun you'll have with your pants on.

Speak to Martin at Able Engineering he is a wealth of knowledge on them...I use them for sending parts to Portugal....
@kevstar one more bit of paper from customs in the next 2wks and plates will released so agent says!!...won't hold my breath...

I think the buying guide has 2 fields

1. do you have deep pockets and lots of tools?

2. Are you bonkers and want a bonkers huge mini lorry landrover?

If the answer to both is yes then go ahead and buy :D

I would love a 101 :D

That's not a 101 silly. It looks more like a 201, or maybe even a 301 to me.
You're right about 'them not getting it'. I only mentioned in passing that Series 1 being sold on ebay by a scammer having a price too good to be true and nearly got my head ripped off!
"WHAT DO YOU WANT ANOTHER ONE FOR?"
Apparantly in some people's eyes having a Series 2 awaiting rebuild, a 90" needing an engine, a Disco 1 needing? (not sure what's happening with it yet. May supply engine and axles to the 90") an XR4i requiring fettling, a Citroen ZX TD spares car plus a Disco 2 and Ibiza on the road is already too many...

1. Well i've got 10K earmarked plus i have holes in my pockets, does that count? Have too many tools for the boxes/chests as it is. Can't help buying them.

2. Oh yes! My first choice since i was about eight years old has been a Stolly, so in actual fact a 101 is a step down!

then personally, I can’t see why you don’t own one already :D

a stolly would be awesome.....

Depends on what you want it for...me I bought a LHD GS non runner here in Portugal if it was RHD might have but would not have gone down the matriculation route just fixed it up and shipped back to uk and sold (the Knokken winch fitted is worth more than I paid for the vehicle)...I'm converting mine to an overlander but I do live in a hot country and plan to use in Morocco a mere days drive away so folding up the tilt and taking door tops off will be normal driving plus with the drop down sides will fit slide out boxes which I have bought...must update my project thread...have you looked at a radio cab as opposed to ambulance the side entry barn doors look more usefull I think...

I think if i'm honest, i want one because they are there.
I first wanted one when i was at Great Billing back in the 90s and waited for the Landy in front of me exit the lake water splash as i was going to make one hell of an entrance. The marshall kept waving me close but i stayed where i was. He walked over and i told him to get the kids all sat along the bank to move back as i was 'going in at speed!' He walked back and told them and they seemed to be very happy with the idea.
I reckon i hit the water in my 90 around 30mph. I'm not sure which of us got wetter. Me or the kids on the bank. It's possible the wave passed over their heads. I got bloody soaked because like a pillock i left the bulkhead vents open!
When i finished the course i parked up and went back to the same spot to watch other cars go through. About half an hour later a 101 turned up. A GS with the door tops off and tilt sides rolled up.
The first thing i spotted was his snorkel...
I don't know if he'd watched me go in before or whether he was equally as big a nutter as me, but i reckon he hit the water faster than me!
It was at that point that i decided i wanted one!
I have looked at radio bodies, but they seem to all be way out of my price range.

I like the colour! Not sure about the engine though. If i was going to go for a straight six it would be the BMW 3.0 diesel
I agree, i'd prefer a V8, a diesel next to your ear s will be loud, even with soundproofing and ear defenders!
