My battery light on my 300tdi has been on for a while but only faintly, pulled into my drive yesterday and went over a cattle grid and the engine cut out on me. No electrics had been working, when they did they were very dim. Ive tested the battery and its reading 11.5v which doesnt change with the engine running. Which leads me to think its the alternator, but i didnt understand why the engine would cut out if the alternator isnt working? just wanted to check to see if there is anything else I should check before removing the alternator?

the volts out of yer battery probably dropped to a level that made the fuel stop soleniod drop out

but yer don't need the battery connected to run the engine (on doozle) do yer?

yes you will cos fuel shut off solenoid is a normaly closed and requires power to keep it open. td5 have lots of management on them so probably more so.

If your alternator is good then you can get away with disconnecting the batt with the engine running.
If the alternator is bad then chances are something important will not like it and shut things down.
Just like baggyjim says on most diesels the fuel solenoid needs current to pass fuel.
On the TD5 even with a good alternator the chances are that the motor shuts down at idle cos the voltage to the ECU drops. The TD5 does not have a fuel shut off solenoid.
Theres a lot to be said for simplicity - especially when things go wrong.
However it does make it easier to hot wire and nick the older diesels. Allegedly.

Not on my 200 it don't (or when it was a td!) - i have a battery isolator and when i remove it the engine continues to run just fine! (just as well really cos me little one keeps kicking it out when we're drivin along, and then i have to wonder why it won't start!)

have you wired the shut off solenoid direct to the battery ? it shouldnt run unless it's got power, unless yours has stuck open (which isnt very safe)

yarbut when its running it gets the power from the alternator.

The isolator is about a foot from the + of the battery! (on the + lead)

how the f@*k do you stop it then when my one jammed had to stall it all the time that was 200tdi not good for clutch:mad:

probably being fed by alternator but battery wont be charging unless you got other wires connected to pos terminal is it just main cable through isolator

Yes, just main cable through isolator. I agree, battery definitely not charging when isolator is off - there is no circuit! Have got a RCD to short the isolator with but not got round to fitting it yet - means everything will work cept the starter motor, so me stereo won't forget to choon into moylesy first thing!

Just put a 2 amp fuse in paralell with the cutoff, works the same an all! Although, if ya kids kick it out ull need a large supply of fuses.

And yes. If the battery voltage dnt go up when you increase the revs to about 14.2 then the alternator aint chargine, either its dead or the wire is broken.
