only me again. i think I may have narrowed the clunking coming from the rear of my 110 down to two possibilities. 1. A knackered rear suspension upper link balljoint. Or 2. A knackered self levelling suspension unit. Does anybody know or have any experience of either removing the self levelling suspension unit and upgrading to heavy duty coils or replacing the sls unit, (would prefer the former considering the price of a new sls unit) Cheers.

I was looking at the drawing in me handbook an it looks as if the SLS unit is just bolted on to the balljoint housing I reckon it's just a matter of unbolting it and fitting the new suspension.

Yes, get rid of the Boge strut. You will need either upgraded coils as the self-levelled ones are very weak, but I would suggest fitting air helper springs instead. Then you can pump them up depending on the load you have.

Sounds complicated does that mean a load of pipes and a compressor. Plus what sort of price do you think, if its less than the price of a new sls I'm quids in.

I think the air helpers are made by Firestone among others. You don't need a compressor, you can pump them up at your local filling station. They use a normal Schraeder valve as on a tyre. On a Defender we fit the valves in the rear cross-member. Of course, you can go mad with on-board pumps and presssure gauges etc but I wouldn't bother.

The ones I have seen fit inside the coil springs and are red, if that is any help.

Nice one thats definitely opened my eyes a bit I was starting to get a bit depressed at the thought of podding out somewhere in the region of 700 notes just for the part. But you've certainly offered an alternative thats worth a look. Thanks also to grunt for having a look through his handbook.

Upgraded my suspension to supergaz h/d shocks and coils all round, and it did improve the suspension, but when runnin' bare i.e no load, ye can certainly feel it!!!!! Clunkin' noise I had was deffo rear ball joint, which got sorted, and no more bangin';)

Think I'll get the ball joint sorted first if that cures the clunk I'm happy.I'm under the impression it's a bit of a bitch to do but cheaper than new coils. If I do go for new coils is it possible to fit them without using a spring compressor i.e jacking up chassis and supporting on axle stands, bottle jacking up the axle on one side high enough to dislocate the top of the coil on the other side, unbolting it fitting new then doing the same on t'other.

Dint we have a disgustion recently about HD springs? Thort the general consensus was dunt fit HD springs unless you're carrying HD loads cuz the ride'll just be really hard & unforgiving, spesh if yer've chalfonts?

So what you're saying is the air helpers might be the way to go. Especially if I want to keep the ride smooth.
