After buying a Td5 discovery ( which I really like ) i've done the usual and scoured the add's for aftermarket accessories,and have come up with a wish list , which I'll get round to eventually, but after owning quite a few cars over the years notice that Td5's are fairly expensive to work on if gathering parts for a engine rebuild , mine is on 155 thou and so sooner or later is going to lunch it's self and retire , looking at engines for sale on the net etc turns up various lumps from a £1000 to 1400 quid (pounds) if you buy a td5 and it does go bang your looking at , at least half the value of the car if it's a 99-2001, for a second hand somewhat untested engine , plus labour if you choose not to do the work yourself , pretty much writing off a vehicle on cost grounds,As great as they are off road are they really a good buy risks involved . ?
 
Maybe you should look at the price of a mitsubishi L200 lump?

A Td5 is shrapnell in comparison and the L200's are worth much less than a landy.

Unfortunately the value of most modern cars cars are far less than the cost of an engine to go in em. That's why lots of cars get scrapped when the HG goes of the cambelt snaps.
 
I've recently had this problem, got a 2002 with that needed a new block and 5 pistons as well s shells and rings etc couldn't find a late 15p engine foe less than £1400 and lik you say you never know what your getting, so decided to get a used bottom end which i was luck with and found a good one for £200 then rebuild the whole thing with using a lot got genuine parts or best quaultiy i could get, should be all done for around £1000 make but that doing it all myself apart from a pressure test and skim on the head.
 
As above really, keep the service up to scratch & drive it. Their an awesome engine, mines got 160,000 and still going strong. Ok changed the injector harness & fuel pressure regulator once due to failure. Keep an eye on your plastic coolant return pipes on your expansion tank they chaff on one another, and wear a hole in them. Potential head gasket failure over something trivial if not noticed in time. Oh yeah, of them 160,000 miles I have driven 100,000 of them.
 
The previous owner changed the harness, and I changed the coolant return last week as it was brittle and snapped only cost £9 quid which was reasonable , as said it is a great engine rover did well , just fingers crossed it treats me well, recently did full service ,both oil filters , changed gearbox oil , axle oil and transfer box oil too, greased props etc.
 
I have just bought a 2001 X plate manual with 143,000 for £3000 and its awaiting an estimate to cure a nasty noise (clutch release bearing or spigot bearing) and fixing an oil leak. May well do the clutch while the box is off.

In my view what I have is not a £3000 car but an 11 year old £35,000 car - and any repairs are just not going to be cheap. I went into this expecting some sizable bills and I dont think I am going to be disappointed!!!!

That said there is a lot I can do myself such as oil and greasing, changing brake discs etc to keep the costs down. I am use to working on MX5s, one advantage of the Disco is you dont have to jack it up for most jobs!!!!
 
Try not to think about it.
The engines are strong, and you sound like you,ve got an understanding of what needs to be done to look after it.

I had a 3 year old VW T5 van, and it needed a new turbo at 36000 miles, and that cost £1480.00 !!!!!.

Sweet as a nut... Hmmmm...

typically I am just about to start stripping the top end of the engine to replace the injector seals and it chucks it down, hail and all... How many months have we been without rain...?!?!? ;)

Oooo the suns out again... Off I go...
 
In my, and my dads experience, they are a great engine, until you have electrical problems, never owned one, but my dad has fixed a few with electrical gremlins :rolleyes:
