I have been thinking about lifting my disco for a while now and I am not sure of the best way, or if it is actually 'needed'.
I have a mostly standard 97 300tdi XS. I have fitted 235/70/16 Insa Dakkars and as yet I have not had any issues using it on green lanes or at a pay and play day in Slindon. From what I understand a 'weakness' if you can call it that of the car is cross axle issues (and the piece of meat behind the wheel of course!). Obviously lockers solve this but they are rather expensive so I got talking to some folks around here and a lift kit was suggested.
I went away and had a look and there is a vast array of kits and 'ways' to do it. Some people have said to do a lift you need new props and radius/trailing arms etc, and others have said just chuck in some shocks and springs. This is not about being 'cheap' but I dont want to buy anything that is not necessary or wrong.
Now, from what I can see (and remember I am a newbie when it comes to this) a lift only really allows bigger tires to be fit (with some cutting maybe). You do not get any extra ground clearance as the diffs are still at the same height, although taller tires would help. Now, do I really need bigger tires? So far I have had no issues. I agree they do look rather awesome raised and with large tires and if it was a cosmetic choice I would not be asking.
I have recently discovered this http://www.mm-4x4.com/super-traction-kit---range-rover-classic---discovery-1---defender-90110-2623-p.asp which improves the articulation which solves the cross axel issue? Is this the right answer?
The vehicle is only used as a toy for green lanes and pay and plays, with the odd use in winter when/if it snows for getting about.
Thanks
