I am looking to purchase my first Land Rover and wondering if a Landy is really for me.

I currently own a Mitsubishi L200 which i have had for about 5 years now although I have been toying with the idea of changing it and the Defender has always been a firm favourite. What ever i buy, i would like it to last and not look too outdated over time so the defender wins on this hands down.

From what i have heard, Defenders have problems often but are cheap to fix - Is this really true?

Most Japanese models tend to run fine for a while and then cost a fortune if something goes wrong - I have been fairly lucky with mine, so i think it is down to how hard a life you give them and if they are looked after - is this the case for the defenders?

What i am looking for is something i can use for hobbies and everyday use (not commuting) - I dont want to be trading a day out shooting or fishing for a day in the garage because something else has broken - would this be the case?

Look forward to hearing about your experiences, no matter if you are just starting out or you a landy guru!

cheers

Joe

I drive a Ford Fiesta Zetec S and I bought a 1985 Land Rover Defender 90 as I've always had a soft spot and my brother and a few mates do a fair bit of off roading. I love it to bits! It's not as car feeling as my brothers Discovery but it classed as a farmers work horse really and everyone seems to prefer a Defender.

As for parts they are very cheap to buy, much rather break the 90 than the Fiesta put it that way haha.

You can always find one for sale and test drive it see how you feel with it, just look out for the problems like rotten chassis, bulkheads, floor panels and other things. Also I would recommend getting one with the Discovery 200tdi or 300tdi engine and running gear fitted unless you want to go newer and get a TD5. Price stays the same as well, I've seen they have been creeping up in price also!

You have to stay on top of the maintenance but they are reliable Or mine has been so far.
They can be cold depending on how many layers of clothing you have on.
They will most likely leak inside when raining.
They are loud and not like any other 4x4.

Saying that I wouldn't change mine. I love it. All boys want one but only a man owns one.
You will understand when you have owned yours for a while.

think you need to be a enthusiast to put up with Landrovers.. you put a lot in and you get a lot out but ignore them and they empty your wallet..

Thanks for the reply, answered a few questions for me. I have been looking for a 300tdi or 200tdi. I am the same, it will not be the number one car i rely on, just a hobby toy, hoped to be as reliable as the L200.

Thanks for the replies, I could have guessed some of the responses though.

only one thing for it i suppose... ;)
