Hello all,

I'm struggling to get the filler plug off the IRD (2005 Td4 XEI), Ive been spraying WD40 on it and with no luck, the subframe is getting in the way etc. any tips on getting the filler plug out?

I don't think they are usually overly tight as such (unless of course some numpty bear last put it in), just the metal they are made from is quite soft.

You generally need a very tight fitting 6 sided socket and it will come off. It not the most difficult bolt to access on a Freelander, but if you don't have much room under the car, then any work on the IRD is a PITA.
 
Get a six point impact socket - grind off the lead-in chamfer so that you get maximum engagement onto the plug - get a couple of long extension bars on the socket wrench so that you can lean the end on the transmission tunnel and keep everything square - and use a breaker bar rather than a socket wrench - then shove like hell - works for me
 
I chiseled mine to turn it to undo it once.

the subframe is getting in the way etc.

You use a 6 sided socket and extension, so the subframe doesn't get in the way. ;)
You might find that hitting the plug on the end with a hammer will help compress the washer and free it off.
I'd also order another plug as they are made of cheese.
 
On the k series it is easy access through wheel arch with a long breaker bar, no extension, that way socket stays square on the filler plug
 
It's an awful thing to get at on a NA spec V6 as there is a catalytic converter right in front of it.:mad: I didn't try going in through the wheel arch-Next time!
FWIW: the diff filler isn't much better!
