Hi all
Just changing the oil on the ird to check for any contamination. Got the drain plug slackened but cant get the level plug out. Ive now rounded the corners off the hex part of the level plug. HELP!!!

Its a 19 as far as I can remember.I ended up whacking a red hot 17mm socket onto the plug ,waited till the socket had cooled. It was easy enough once I had a good hold on it.

You might get an 18mm onto yours,I had completely made **** of mine.

I gave up on mine before I wrecked it. I am going to give it another go with better access in my neighbours inspection pit and using a decent 3/4 socket set.

small set of stilsons,10" if you have them and hit face of plug with hammer as you apply more and more pressure to stilson. shifted it no probs on mine as all else failed!

tight fitting socket with a stout bar, and access through the wheel arch for a straight pull. if all else fails irwin do a good set of rounded nut and bolt removers, search on here as they have been mentioned.

got it out with irwin bolt and nut removers. Brill bit of kit.
You will have got swarf into the ird ,might be a godd idea to clean it out.
I hope you tried all the other options listed above.

I had totally fugked mine beyond all recognition.Tried vice grip ,lump hammer and cold chisel and maybe more ,before I decided to heat to almost red hot and old 17mm socket.
Then attached it to a 9"+4" extension bars. Then on my back I whacked the socket onto the filler plug from the end of the extension bar with my lump hammer , held the level behind the subframe
When it cooled (i think i DOUSED it with water) , I attached my ratchet and it came off easily with a very tight hold .

With the added bonus that I could fill the ird and drive to the dealer to get a new plug, with the old plug with new washer held in hand tight .

Jesus I did not want to have to type that way of doing this job again, because I have typed it here before , and keep seeing the same problems appear day in day out .

Just a simple scroll down the page might reveal that someone asked the same question half an hour or half a day before  I might rant on .......
........

Probably spurred on by this thread I finally checked the oil level in my IRD today - no luck with the 19mm socket due to the flats of the plug head being rounded off a bit. I got it off with some heat and persuading an 18mm socket to fit with the help of a hammer.

Will do a temporary fix over the weekend by welding a new nut onto the filler plug.

And after all that the oil level was fine!

Would you consider tack welding the 18mm socket to the plug ? I would . :) .
