After a life time of drooling over Land Rover products I have finally managed to join the family. I had driven many through my work and in other areas and my favourite was always the 110 Station Wagon. However, pressure from spouse and tight budgets meant I always had to go down the boring family route.

I have a new spouse and she encouraged me to go for it. A Defender would not have been practical for me so I have bought a Discovery 4 3.0. And I love it.

I had a Skoda Yeti before this and it was a great car. It was a 2.0 turbo with four wheel drive and I often thought it was like a little Discovery. Now I am in the Discovery, I don't think I was that far off the mark. But little was the operative word.

I live in Shotts, North Lanarkshire. For those that don't know, Shotts quite high up, it has its own unique weather and some say it can snow in July. That's a bit far fetched, but during the winter, if one of Scotland's motorways has to close because of snow, it is always the M8 at Shotts. Having the Discovery means I should be able to get out and about whatever the weather!

The car is a great size inside too, with three step-sons aged 14, 12 and 10 they have plenty room and the boot is cavernous. I am not planning on using the extra seats, but they well come in handy as a rugby team bus when virus's allow that.

I am looking forward to happy times with my Discovery.

Those Yetis are surprisingly capable. Not LR capable but enough for many situations.
Defender is very Utilitarian, you will feel it after long drive too.

We both loved the Yeti, and it was quick too. The Discovery has slowed us both down and that is a good thing as we are enjoying the journey more. It is unfair to compare such different vehicles, designed and built for different purposes but surprisingly similar. Through my work I have driven many different vehicles and it is fair to say the Yeti was one of the best handling cars I have driven.

A lot of my driving is, by necessity, motorway stuff around central Scotland and I do think a Defender would have been a step too far. The Range Rover and Sport were outside my price bracket and not my first choice anyway.

I am looking forward to many happy miles with the Discovery.

I’m sorry to hear that but you may have been looking at different quality used vehicles
