Picked up my FL about 3 weeks ago, it's a 2.0 TD4 Auto year 2000 - Smooth engine sound, gear changes are okay, 118K on the clock. Over the past week I've noticed a few times where the landy has decided to output a huge amount blue smoke from the exhaust. It's not a pretty site...

It's been difficult to track down the cause but these are the times when it seems to happen:

When I've started the motor again after completing a journey of any length. Smoke instantly starts pouring out before even pulling away. (Doesn't always do it though)

OR

Steep hill climbs in low gear (Also doesn't always do it)

The problem doesn't go away by increasing revs but simply vanishes after 2-3 minutes of driving. There's also no noticeable loss of power.

I don't know when a service was last carried out so I'll be replacing the filters, oil and also the crank breather for the modified BMW version shortly. Not sure if that'll help at all... The EGR has already been blanked.

The VCU was replaced at 80K with a recond. from Bell Engineering.

Any ideas?

Could also be the turbo on its way out, sorry to say. Not easy to diagnose without seeing really. Could you video it and post that. might help people guide you

Our ldv maxus did this. we couldn't find any faults so gave it a full engine service and it hasn't done it since. We put it down to the old thin oil.

The oil specified by LR is 5w30. However the oil specified in the L47R manual is 10w40. I have that in mine, the engine runs smoother and quieter as a result.
Mine was also smoking on the odd occasion when I bought it. New 10w40 synthetic and a replacement crank case filter cured it completely. As it has done on many M47s on previous occasions.

I agree with Nodge68 old oil will do it as it gets a bit weaker as the mile go on but I also use 10w40 as was advised by a man who knows best at the local lr garage he says if your engine has done over 40,000 then use the 10w40's as it is only new engines they put the 5w30's in also a good point make sure the crankcase filter is changed also better go for the BMW one. and blue smoke will always mean oil is being burnt not diesel.
